Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live, sports prep live, where we unbox the mic and talk excellent in athletics.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome back to another episode, another edition of Sports prep live. I'm your host. Graydon Prescott, this past week has not been the most exciting week in sports, but there are some big stories here at UNLV and some basketball stories. So we got to get back into some hoop after a golf focused episode last week. So I got KB here. We got some things to discuss on pretty much all levels of basketball. We'll start with just today. Actually, Cooper flag declared for the NBA Draft. Surprising, absolutely nobody. There were some hopes that he would stick around at Duke to play with the booze or twins. That was because, right, just because he, he's young. He skipped, he for went his junior year of high school, so he's obviously very young. And once, once he gets to the NBA, he'll actually be and he's close with the Bucha toys, and he'll actually be about the same age that LeBron James was when he arrived in the NBA, same birth month and all that. I think Cooper flag will, relative to LeBron, be about 13 days younger, okay, but still very, very young coming into the NBA, high school, high school senior, right? He's still 18. He won't be 19 until mid December, December, so yeah, Cooper flag, bright future, declared for the NBA Draft today. I don't think that was a surprise to anybody. I would like to talk a little bit about his game, how his college career went, or his one year in college went, kind of ended in a disappointment, sure, but all told, great year for him. I

K.B. 2:09
mean, he was, I think he's number one in every statistic.

Graydon Prescott 2:13
Yeah, he will be, obviously, he's going to be the number one pick in the draft, sure, without question, this is as obvious a number one pick as Victor when many ammo was a couple of years ago. Maybe not quite as hyped up as Vic was, but it's just as obvious a number one pick. I

K.B. 2:29
know we're going to focus on some collegiate stuff here at the on the in the opening salvo of the show, but just to kind of put up a fine point on this, where do you think in terms of the teams that are available. Where do you think he might end up coming into

Graydon Prescott 2:43
the league? Okay, so here's the thing, the draft lottery hasn't happened yet. Correct, correct. So the way the draft lottery operative word there was, think so, yeah. So the way the draft lottery works is the three worst teams all have a 14% chance of getting the number one pick. I don't know who will get the number one pick? I will tell you

K.B. 3:03
this, what teams are in contention for getting the number one pick. So the

Graydon Prescott 3:07
teams with the highest chances of getting the number one picks are going to be the Utah Jazz, the Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets. Okay, those are gonna be your three. And then after that, it'll be pelicans, and in a really weird roundabout way the Oklahoma City Thunder. Because of all the draft picks that they have, they've acquired a lot of they might they have, like, a 12% chance of messing around.

K.B. 3:28
Life would really be unfair if OKC got Cooper flag right,

Graydon Prescott 3:32
and then following the thunder, it's Brooklyn, Toronto, San Antonio, Houston, Portland, and it's Houston via the Phoenix,

K.B. 3:39
sun. Now, the reason I asked that was a loaded question. The reason I asked that question is because one of those teams which would be really interesting to me, because I think it would, it would shake the foundation of that franchise, the pelicans, the Pelican okay? So if, if the pelicans should happen to land the number one pick, right, just like they did with a nice yay or nay. Does the guy with the small hands, Zion? Does he stay, or does he go if they land Cooper flay? I

Graydon Prescott 4:09
think he stays really here, here's why, here's why. Um, Zion, actually, I think he has a better chance of going if they don't get the Number One Pay. And here's what

K.B. 4:19
he is, the first part time professional NBA player, okay, in a long, long time. Okay, he's a part time NBA player, part time.

Graydon Prescott 4:26
I'm not going to get into the Zion Williams and talk. Look, he's always injured. He's quite undisciplined. But here's why, if I'm the New Orleans

K.B. 4:34
he's always injured and he's like 24 again, not ad, can I finish? You

Graydon Prescott 4:39
asked me a question. I did. Here's why. If I'm the New Orleans Pelicans and I get the number one pick, I'm keeping Zion Cooper flag. I'm not, by the way, but go on, I think Cooper flag is the polar opposite of Zion, absolutely. And in a weird way, I think Zion would benefit from having a guy like Cooper flag around. Cooper flag is a hard worker. He is in shape. He went to Duke just like Zion Williams. Be the franchise guy coming in. Yeah, he would be the guy. And he would also, he would also probably humble Zion Williams real quick, yes. So because Cooper flag has these credentials, and he's, you know, a more touted prospect, he's probably going to be a better basketball player, more disciplined, yeah, more discipline. He's healthier. Because of that, I think more talented, okay? Because of that, I think Cooper flag coming to New Orleans would help Zion. I think it would a take a little bit of pressure off of him, sure, in terms of being the franchise guy, but B put a little bit of pressure on him, as if to say, Okay, this rookie is coming in, making you look bad. What are you gonna do about it? Right? Pecking order changes immediately, right? So because of that, I think they keep Zion for a one year experiment, at least if I'm the pelicans, I see

K.B. 5:45
if he wants to be a full time NBA player, as a player to see

Graydon Prescott 5:48
it, to see if the influence of a hard working, super talent coming into your team changes things. That's why get him. To put down the hammer. That's why I would get him. I would give him a year. Now, as for the teams that I would love to see Cooper flag land, I'd love to see San Antonio jump and land. Cooper flag, to see him with wimb and Yama. Maybe if Chris Paul sticks around for another year, I think that could be a really dangerous team. I hope he doesn't go to Charlotte or Utah. That would just be sad. Washington. Now, if the thunder get the number one pick, I will be absolutely devastated.

K.B. 6:27
But there's, you know, for those teams, and that all makes sense for those teams. I think there's, there's not going to be a lot of drama, you know, but I was asking because of the situation with the guy that I like to call the Hamburglar. And, you know, that's a throwback. You're a little bit young. So the hamburger was actually a character, the mascot for Burger King. And he would, you know, he wore his his mask, you know, like a thief would wear in the middle of the night, kind of like that, that raccoon type mask. He would wear his mask, and he would go steal the hamburgers because they were so delicious. Evidently, at Burger King and Zion came into the league loving to eat, like, like, he did not pass up a meal. And it showed, I'm not sure what he got up to in terms of his weight, but I think it was three I think it was over 300 Yeah, I think it was 310 and he's not, like, seven feet tall, he's six five, right? So if you're six five and you are over 300 pounds, like there's just no reason for that, unless you are no on someone's offensive line.

Graydon Prescott 7:26
I'm sorry, it was 330

K.B. 7:28
That is insane. At his peak, that is insane, so I call him the Hamburglar right now. You know people are saying that there needs to be an arrest warrant put out for Ben Simmons, and they're saying the reason that arrest warrant should be put out for Ben Simmons is because he's basically stealing money from the clippers, and he was stealing money from the 70 Sixers and stealing money from the Brooklyn, Brooklyn Nets because they felt like they weren't getting anywhere near the value that they should have gotten for a guy who was a number one pick and the Rookie of the Year and and all those accolades that he received Early on, and he was really hoping early on, but ham burglar, the guy that is undisciplined, and I think he's gotten a little bit more disciplined, but he's in the same boat. You know, that franchise, the pelicans, have invested a lot of money in this young man. And he is a young man, but he has absolutely no discipline. I don't know when the last time he's played, what has he been in the league? Five years? 666, years. Yeah. Has he played a full season,

Graydon Prescott 8:24
like every game in a season, or just close to,

K.B. 8:27
let's say, has he played over 60 games in a season? Has he played? How many times has he done

Graydon Prescott 8:33
that? Okay, once Zion Williamson's career high games played in a season is 70. He played 70 games. What is his inaugural year, no, he played 24 games. His inaugural year, he played 70 games, just last year, not this season. He only played 30 the year before. At age 23 he played 70 games, and in those 70 he averaged 23.6 rebounds and five assists, right? So that was probably his. That was his. And then in the 2021 shortened season, which was a 72 game season, he played 61 of the 72 games. That's not bad, and he averaged 27.8 rebounds and forces. So,

K.B. 9:11
yes, you know. And again, we're not going to take over the whole show with Zion, but the point is, he's not a talentless individual. Zion has a lot of talent now he's nowhere near the talent that Cooper flag is, but he has no discipline, and he doesn't stay healthy, and a lot of the reason that he hasn't stayed on the court and the injuries that he suffered, you can't beat 330 pounds at six five and expect that you're going to put the best product in terms of your your ability to be out there on the floor wreaking havoc, right? And so I just wonder if they do get a cooper flag, and we'll get off the subject. But if they do get a cooper flag, I do not see them hanging on to Zion Williamson. It's just too much of a risk.

Graydon Prescott 9:50
That's fair. And the pelicans do have a very, very, very good young core. They have Trey Murphy, who's just excellent. They have dejante. Story, who, unfortunately, he tore his Achilles, but he's a great defender. He's sure all star Brandon Ingram is an all star like CJ McCollum, again, kind of the opposite of Zion. He got injured too, but he's averaged basically 20 points for the last 10 years. And he plays, what? 80 games? Yeah, he's a worker. 8080, 81 he shows up seven. Yeah, he shows up and shows out, right? So he's there. So you got CJ McCollum, who is going to give you 20 points a game pretty much every year, right? Trey Murphy is a young star, Brandon Ingram, and then Zion, and of course, to John Tay Murray. But the pelicans have a good young core, and they were supposed to be a great team this year, they ended up being horrible because of injuries and some other drama that we don't need to get into. But I think if they get Cooper flag and keep Zion for a year, it would really I

K.B. 10:47
have no vested interest in it, but I you know, they've suffered so much in dealing with Zion, it would be nice for the basketball gods to kind of shine a little bit of love on the New Orleans Pelicans. And if they get Cooper flag, it would be really good for the franchise, wherever he goes, You know, he's going to be fantastic. So he is not the issue. Cooper flag is outstanding. He's a great young man. He can play basketball to the likes of which we haven't seen in a generation for a kid his age, probably not since Lebron James. So there is not a problem with Cooper flag. It's just what can happen. And any place else he goes, he's going to be a great fit. It's just what can happen if he gets drafted by someone like New Orleans. I think I happen to, I happen to personally think that Zion is out of there. But enough about Zion. Williamson Hamburglar, also moving on to other news in the collegiate sphere, we'll do a little bit more basketball before we do for all UNLV, yeah, yo. Coach passner is making moves. Okay, so he just, just

Graydon Prescott 11:52
this past weekend, yes, signed his fifth or got his fifth

K.B. 11:56
shot out to Coach Josh, he is doing the darn thing. He got

Graydon Prescott 12:00
his fifth transfer. And I'm gonna probably butcher this name, logy. Dave, yes, um, that's about as good as I can do. 6868, 250, yeah. So he's built like LeBron. James. He's a big boy. Shot 38% on threes at Iowa, which is nice, but, you know, only five points per game and four rebounds probably in 21 starts, so he was probably playing a little bit more of a limited role. Under utilized, yeah, uh huh. Under under Coach Fran McCaffrey, who was fired, might be why he's not there any longer. Yes, and his also his brother, chicken,

K.B. 12:39
C, H, E, I, C, K,

Graydon Prescott 12:41
N, check, not Dave. He was a player at UNLV. UNLV just a few years back. So Coach Pastner, he's pulling all the strings right now. He's got, he's gotten five transfers, right, including Al Green, great singer, yeah, right.

K.B. 12:57
Louisiana. Tech, yeah. Al Green, yeah, yeah. That's a name to live up to. Live up to, but he's in a completely different sphere of entertainment, so it should be, all right, no, that's not a name you're gonna forget. Al Green, point guard from Louisiana Tech. And I'm sure he's gonna stay together. And then he brought in Howard Fleming, Howard

Graydon Prescott 13:14
from Rio Grande. Yep. He's nice. He's nice. Yes. Emmanuel Steven, Arizona,

K.B. 13:20
big dude. That's a big one. He's a center Yes. Draw Gibbs law, law from Illinois, University of Illinois fighting a lion eye, yep. And then

Graydon Prescott 13:30
he has also retained four of the Kevin Kruger High School commits Okay, including that group is headlined by Mason Avenue soon Yes, out of Coronado, Vegas local. He is a, you know, state runner up a couple years back, and he was a problem at Coronado all year. He's tough. They re they struggled when he wasn't on the floor, but when he was, they were, they were the best team in the city for for quite some time. And then they also landed at another high school commit, Isaac Williamson, out of Roosevelt High School in Cali. Okay, again, very good ball player. He's a combo guard. Yeah, that state produces a lot of good ball players. Yeah, absolutely. California is one. It's California, Texas, New York, yeah. I mean Florida. You're James Harden. You're Russell West, yeah, just in California. Paul George, just in California. So I get lot of great players coming out, Jalen green, Evan Mobley, all something in the water, yeah, right. It's just a great basketball state, yes. So obviously Isaac Williamson committing is a great thing for them or for the program at UNLV. So Coach Pastner without having, without having coached the game already

K.B. 14:44
making him impressed. Yeah, I am impressed in the the unfortunate part about this, because I know that Coach Kruger had a lot of loyalty from the players in this program, and understandably so, but some of this feels like. A you know what Coach Pastner has done, some of it feels not only long overdue, but it feels like a moment of duh, like this. These types of things should have been going on on an ongoing basis. UNLV is a championship program. There has been an NCAA championship in Las Vegas, and I think that was the impetus for the change that ad Harper made, because not only do the alumni and the student body and a lot of the folks you know, the sports fans and spectators in the state, but the players themselves, they want to get back to tapping into that DNA that UNLV has, and even when they didn't win the championship, when they played Duke, they were still balling. I mean, people were shocked that they didn't win that championship against Duke, but UNLV has a rich history of great basketball, obviously, under Coach Tarkanian and everything that spawned from him and the tile chomping, which was always fun to watch. Um, he's, he's probably, there's probably no bigger legend on the sideline of a basketball court than than coach Tark, other than maybe Bobby Knight, you know, throwing chairs and stuff

Graydon Prescott 16:10
like that. Oh, Coach Tark, Bobby Knight. Coach K,

K.B. 16:13
from No, no, but Coach, Coach K, the antics aren't there. I'm just talking about the entertainment value of watching that coach on, it's on the court side. It's Tark and Bobby Knight. It's Bobby Knight, yeah, but you know that DNA is, is, is in the UNLV basketball program, and I really do believe I didn't know him. Didn't know about him when he was first posited as a potential replacement for Coach Kruger. But I am becoming a believer? Yeah, I am becoming a believer. He is doing the darn thing he said he was going to be focused. He is completely reshuffled, which is to be expected his coaching staff. So I don't think, I think one individual from Coach Kruger's administration is staying on at the most under Coach Pastner, right? And no disrespect to the guys that were here, but something wasn't happening that should have been happening. And it seems like it's early, but it seems like Coach passner is really focused on making this a better and more competitive championship basketball program once again. Yeah,

Graydon Prescott 17:15
absolutely. And before we switch topics from Coach Pastner, I just have one question for you, and I have, I think we're going to have a very similar opinion. Of course. Do you think that coach passengers or the UNLV transfer portal success has a lot to do with Coach passengers resume as a basketball coach, and not as much as a as a UNLV blood or somebody who has been in the program? I think it has a lot more to do with this. Man won a national championship at Arizona. He is a coach of the year and one of the toughest conferences in college basketball. He's been to the Elite Eight as an assistant coach and as a head coach. He has a very good resume as a college basketball personality, not just as a coach, but also as a player. I think have that, having that kind of person at the helm sure definitely changes things for transfers and for for high school kids looking to commit to a school, even though Krueger was, you know, he was of the UNLV program, you know, played here for a year. I think having somebody with that gravitas as a college basketball personality, yes. And as a college basketball coach, I think that might be the reason why we've seen such a jump in the UNLV transfer portal, where, for for a couple of days, it looked like people were on their way out. Now the narrative is completely flipped, right? This dude is making moves just as much as any other school in the country right now. Yeah.

K.B. 18:39
And I, you know, I'm a big fan of Dedan who left the program to join LSU, yeah, and maybe because he didn't, you know, he didn't have that relationship with Coach Pastner. Didn't know about Coach Pastner. What have you did on is a Hooper? I'm always going to be a fan. I'm going to wish him nothing but success over there at LSU. I wish he had stayed, because I feel like what Coach Pastner is putting together, the players that he brings in are going to be responsive, but he seems as if he is really a players coach. Obviously, he's doing a great job on the recruiting front already. So it when it comes to the X's and O's, you know, he wasn't a TV analyst, so he's analyzed a lot of basketball, yeah, not only, you know, from the standpoint of being a coach, but just educating viewers of different basketball games. You know, he was an analyst on ESPN, so really smart basketball mind and but not only that, this guy is all about dotting the I's and crossing the t's. He's about the x's and the O's. He's about execution. And like you said, he's got quite the resume. So I believe he is going to be really successful in his tenure here at UNLV. Remains to be seen. But from the work that I've seen, a little bit of work that I've seen thus far, he is really putting it together, and I am excited about what's going to be on the forefront for UNLV, UNLV basketball this season. Yep, great. And

Graydon Prescott 20:00
Prescott here on Sports prep live on UNLV, K, U, N, V radio, HD, 290, 1.5 the beat. So we have a little bit of a transition to make now from college athletics to professional athletics with the NBA Playoffs getting started recently,

K.B. 20:18
before we do that, I do want it that's okay before we do that, because there's a lot to cover there. Let me instead of switching levels in terms of collegiate and professional, let's switch sports just quickly. Oh, okay, okay. There's a gentleman that we've talked about a couple of times on the show. He's gonna leave you, and he left over money. Yes, Nico. I pronounce his name, I leave you, because that's the reputation that he created for himself. Nico left Tennessee, yes, and actually he was kind of asked to leave because he was kind of holding them, I don't think they asked him. It was less of an ass, like, you're gone, get out. Yeah, you're going coach people and shout out to coach. You pull like, yo. You've got to put a stop to some of this stuff. So Nico was really the first collegiate athlete to become a holdout. Yeah, right. Not the first person to enter transport portal or anything like that, or decide, Hey, maybe I can find success at another squad. But no, he basically became a holdout over money after he had already signed a contract, right? So Tennessee upheld their end of the contractual obligation. Nico felt like, well, instead of this ten million 10 million, ladies and gentlemen, he signed a contract for ten million over the course of his tenure at Tennessee, which they were paying. They weren't behind in payments. But he decided, well, I'm worth more than that. I want to rearrange or re shuffle this contract. And Tennessee stuck to their guns and said, No, we are not doing that, nor should they have done that. And so he holds out he's not coming to practice, you know, he's not returning to coach people's phone calls. And so Coach finally says, You know what, I'm out. So you take your talent and you go wherever you feel like you need to be, but I'm not paying you more money. You're not going to be in a situation where the coach is calling you and you're not picking up the phone, right? You are your representative. I

Graydon Prescott 22:03
like to quickly point out there are 16 teams in the SEC, 16 starting quarterbacks last season in the SEC. And out of those 16 SEC starting quarterbacks, Nico was not first or second or third or fourth or fifth, not even top 10 in passing yards. For that matter, he was 11th out of all of the SEC quarterbacks hubris in passing yards. Tennessee was a team reliant on the running game, not as much as the passing game. They were a great team on the ground, not really through the air, right, right, which has a lot more to do with their running back than their quarterback. Sure, sure. So I just don't know why to say he wasn't

K.B. 22:46
an elite quarterback. He was a five star coming out of high school, right? He was good, right?

Graydon Prescott 22:50
But I really don't know why he thought, for some reason he was so valuable that he should

K.B. 22:56
have been getting $4 million a year instead of $2.4 million a year,

Graydon Prescott 23:00
exactly like $16 million for four years to play college football, right? And you're not even close to the best quarterback in the country, correct? Or in your conference. Yeah, you're not close to the best in your conference or the country. For you know, not the best in the country, not close to the best in your conference. He's just, he was an okay quarterback, I mean, Jalen milrose is in the SEC case and shoot, I forgot I'm blanking his last name. Georgia. Quarterback, he is in the SEC. Carson. Carson Beck. Carson bet Thank you. Yes, he's in the SEC. LSU has had some great quarterbacks. Yes, Texas arch Manning sec. He's gonna be the starter this year. There are some great quarterbacks in that conference. Well, here's

K.B. 23:42
the interesting thing about this story, you know, as we wrap it up and put a button on it and move over to some basketball so he the reports are he's going to get picked up by UCLA. Yes, he's committed, but UCLA made it a point to put out there publicly, we are not paying him anywhere near $4 million and we're not paying them 2.4 so he, maybe he, and he's a California guy, right? He came out of California in high school, so maybe he wanted to be back, you know, in home, at home, and be comfortable. But the money didn't change. So what was it all for? And you can't tell me in terms of competitive conferences, UCLA is a respectable school, but it's not an SEC football

Graydon Prescott 24:21
program. It's Big 10, but it's not like Big 10. It's not your Michigan, big tune, Ohio State, big two, yeah, Penn State. It's not a real 10 football

K.B. 24:32
respectable school, no doubt about it. It's a pretty good it's a

Graydon Prescott 24:35
solid football team in division one football. Tennessee is the elite. Tennessee is a Tennessee. Tennessee is a perennial Top 10 team. Yes, UCLA is very rare. So

K.B. 24:47
I kind of tell like Nico, I believe you is hustling backwards, but we will see he can make a liar out of all of us who feels like this was a really bad move. We'll see it'll take a lot. Yes, it will. I. Um, but that's the latest move. Latest News on Nico on believe you, he has obviously departed Tennessee, and it looks like he's going to be the quarterback at UCLA, and their coach there did announce to the quarterbacks that are now in the program that, hey, it looks like we're going to sign Nico so that those quarterbacks can, if they choose, make some moves for their own collegiate careers.

Graydon Prescott 25:21
Noble move by the coach. Yes, absolutely. So in the last two and a half minutes we have here. We quickly, we quickly want to touch on some NBA news. We were talking a little bit earlier today about the NBA playoffs and how we think things are going to shake up. So right now, the thunder, the nuggets, the Timberwolves and the Warriors won their first games in the West, right and then in the east, the Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks won their first games. But nobody has played a game too quite yet. As of right now, I feel fine about the Lakers losing game, sure. And I think Golden State is dangerous. They are, I really do. They are. I think this is as well constructed a basketball team as there is in the league right now. They're a great defensive team. And Jimmy Butler joining the team, especially with his playoff performance. Playoff Jimmy, Golden State is dangerous. He showed really, Dave, he showed it. I think there's five teams in the league that could potentially win a championship, okay, and four that I really think, like, okay, these guys can do it. I think it's the thunder, the Celtics, the Lakers, the warriors, and then my fifth would be Cleveland, but they have to get through Boston, which is the tricky part. I think anybody any of those, and that will not be easy. Yeah, I think any of those three teams in the West can beat each other, which is why I say them all. I think the Warriors can beat the Lakers. I think the Lakers can be the Warriors. I think the Warriors can beat the thunder. I think the thunder can be the Warriors. And the same thing for the Lakers and the thunder, right? But east, I don't really see Cleveland beating the Celtics and seven game series, but if they do, then yes, Cleveland is one of those teams that can win an NBA championship. They did win 64

K.B. 27:01
I'm glad one of us is really focused on the basketball aspect of this. I'm more of a revenge guy, so I liked that that there was a lot of comeuppance this weekend. Memphis Grizzlies received some comeuppance this weekend. They've had too much hubris for a few years now, the gun play and all of this childishness on the basketball court. I'm fine from John Morant, so I expect him to be going home soon, if not in five, yeah, if not in four, probably in five. Yeah. And the other person that received some comeuppance this weekend is another gentleman by the name of Nico, uh huh. Nico out of Dallas, Harrison. Nico Harrison has received some comeuppance, and he needs to be careful, I think, on his off days, which will be the rest of the summer, he's probably wearing a Timberwolves Jersey right now, hoping that the Lakers do not advance, yeah.

Graydon Prescott 27:50
And then if they advance, he'll be wearing the Warriors Jersey if they Correct, correct. And then after he does

K.B. 27:54
not want to see the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals or in the the finals, or win a championship. I think if they do win a championship, Nico, our

Graydon Prescott 28:03
decision employment are just limited. Our discussion earlier was, we were trying to figure out how far it would take the Lakers to go for Nico to be guaranteed to be fired, correct, which, which is kind of a messed up discussion to be having to wish firing upon another man. I'm not saying, I'm not saying I want him to get fired because I'm a Lakers fan. He I'm a really big fan of Nico Harrison because I am a Lakers I love Nico Harris great jersey. But how far do we think it would take as our last topic of discussion here, how far do we think it would take the Lakers to go in order for Nico if

K.B. 28:40
