Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. Sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellent in athletics.

Welcome back to sports prep live, ladies and gentlemen, that is a boring introduction for a boring Super Bowl. Welcome back to sports prep live. I'm your host. Graydon Prescott, today, of course, day after the Super Bowl, we got to talk about it a little bit. Got my man. KB, here we're going to talk about the Super Bowl. We're going to talk about some NCAA basketball, both on the men's and women's side. This is sports prep live, 91.5 HD, to the beat. KB, you ready to go? Let's get it all right. We'll start with the Super Bowl, because that's what everybody has been talking about. Final score, 4040, to 22

K.B. 1:10
which doesn't really tell the story.

Graydon Prescott 1:11
No, no, not, not at all. So real quick, Jalen Hurts 17 for 22 passing, 221 yards, two touchdowns, one pick, okay? Patrick mahomes, 257 yards, three touchdowns. You would think, okay, that's, you know, no, not

K.B. 1:32
good. Yeah, he got all those, those yards in garbage town. Absolutely.

Graydon Prescott 1:35
33 yards at halftime, correct? 33 six of 1433. Yards, two

K.B. 1:41
picks and 38 well into the third quarter,

Graydon Prescott 1:45
and he, he, although he had 33 passing yards, somehow, some way, the chiefs managed to get a fall into a deficit that was larger than the number 33 they were down 34 to zero, yes, at one point in this game, and it was just pure domination, unlike anything we've seen in a Super Bowl since 2013 when the Philadelphia, or excuse me, the Seattle Seahawks, they beat the Denver Broncos 43 to eight. It's, it's, that was a drubbing, yeah, and it's unlike you know, you don't see Super Bowl blowouts like this, correct? Very often. The last few Super Bowls, as a matter of fact, have been decided by three points more

K.B. 2:31
performances as bad as Patrick mahomes performance was especially coming from someone who was at one time, because leading the gentleman it is over at one time who was in the conversation for the goat now he could get there.

Graydon Prescott 2:43
Okay, okay, okay, let's not say it's over quite yet. It is over for now, for now. Yes, yes, but here's here's the problem. Patrick mahomes still get back there. He's still only 28 years old, correct? And Tom Brady took an undefeated patriots team to the Super Bowl in 2007 and managed to lose to Eli Manning. Yes, that was his attempt for his fourth Super Bowl Championship. So Tom Brady also had some setbacks, because he lost another one after that to Eli Manning as well before winning his fourth Patrick Mullins has three correct, so he's got time.

K.B. 3:14
So I don't mean it's over indefinitely,

Graydon Prescott 3:17
but for now. But for now, let's just shut up and the knowledge shut it down. Brady is the goat of football. As much as I like Patrick mahomes, I think he is a more talented player than Tom Brady ever was. You know, athleticism, ability to run the ball some of the throws he can make, ability to keep possessions alive when he has no business keeping them alive. I've never seen anything like it. Nobody has but Tom Brady just seven Super Bowl rings, and he never lost to Patrick mahomes in the postseason. Beat him in the Super Bowl 31 nine, which is arguably the second worst performance, or really unarguably the second worst performance that mahomes has had in

K.B. 3:57
true but the point is, right, we know how great Tom Brady is, but the point is, Patrick is probably going to have to get six to be in that go conversation. Now, had he secured a three peat, he's in that conversation with maybe four or five right championships. Now, he's won the Super Bowl. He has won MVP by each of the times that he's been No, I mean, the Super Bowl, yeah, Super Bowl MVP, yeah, three times, and he's won league MVP or four two times, yep. So there's no question that he is really the only one in this generation knocking on that door for the goat. But that conversation is over for now, until he, I would say he gets six, yeah, Lombardi Trophy, because he's got to get at least six to get that conversation going right.

Graydon Prescott 4:49
Because now the narrative, the narrative was okay, nobody's ever gone three in a row right in the NFL. And even that's, that's something even Tom Brady never did, correct. Yeah? But Tom Brady has seven, and Patrick Holmes is now sitting at three, and now, because he didn't get the three beat, there's nothing that Patrick mahomes has done that Tom Brady has Correct. Tom Brady has more MVPs. He has more yards. His career high yards for a season is higher than Patrick mahomes, touchdowns higher than Patrick mahomes, and we see the talent that Patrick mahomes has. But Tom Brady has also won back to back Super Bowls before, and he won four times in a span of six years. Yes, so regardless of how talented mahomes is right now, we got to shut down all of the time. He

K.B. 5:30
has nothing coming up that is going to separate him from Tom Brady now that the three beat was not achieved. But we don't only want to focus all of our attention on, on Patrick mahomes and a very anemic outing. I mean, it was bad. And again, the score, the final score, does not and I'm sure most of you out there saw this game. I'm not sure that you saw the end of it, because there's a lot of people that walked out after the third quarter, yeah, but the score does not really do justice to how much of a drubbing this actually was defensively. Offensively, the Eagles gave it to the chiefs, yeah, at every turn. And speaking of which, I know that we've concentrated a little bit here on Mr. Mahomes, but Jalen Hurts.

Graydon Prescott 6:19
Jalen Hurts playing solid game. Wow, wow, wow. Yeah, this

K.B. 6:24
kid is unbelievable. He coming out of Oklahoma, then I think he transferred to Alabama, vice versa. Yes, the reverse. You're right. He is something special, and he's been telling us it's coming. His mom has been telling us who I think is his manager. In fact, I think his whole team, you know, his managers and lawyers and all of that, he's got a team of women around him, some really smart women around him, super humble. I mean, this guy signed, what, a couple years ago, a $255 million contract, and still lives in a $2,000 a month apartment. This kid is focused. You just don't see that a lot the type of discipline that it takes to be that's Coby esque. Now, I don't know that COVID lived in a $2,000 a month apartment, but I do know that he lived with Jerry West for a good time, so he wasn't out there worried about, you know, spending a lot of money, you know, doing all of these extracurricular things that a lot of young athletes do. He was really focused early on in his career, and it just showed over the life of his career, Jalen Hurts, I think, has that same sort of focus, yeah.

Graydon Prescott 7:33
And what I loved about Jalen Hurts this game. Now there's always going to be the Eagles historically, and to this day, have the best offensive line. Sure that helps. Yeah, absolutely, he had a lot of time to games passes off in the pocket, and the Chiefs pass rush just wasn't there the entire game. But regardless, Jalen Hurts. He doesn't really make mistakes. Up until the Super Bowl, he had thrown 209 consecutive passes without an interception. Right now, mahomes had thrown 255 but he threw two interceptions in the Super Bowl, both of which were very avoidable. Those were his mistakes, one resulting in a pick six, right? And we'll get to that. But Jalen Hurts. He just he threw one interception, but just looking at it, it wasn't exactly his fault, and he doesn't make mistakes. He only had five incomplete passes, 22 passing attempts. He doesn't fumble the football, which we saw mahomes Do as well. He makes smart decisions, and he just leads his team, yes, and I IQ, and he leads the team saquon Barkley, who's been magnificent. I got nothing but great things to say. New York native myself, saquon Barkley came up on the Giants. I got nothing but great things to say about say he had a rough game. He had 200 he had 25 carries for 57 yards. That's 2.3 yards of carry. Not good, way well below his season average, way below what we expected of Yes, but, but go ahead, yeah. But despite him being neutralized, we saw Jalen Hurts step up and look like the MVP of the Super Bowl that he was through the duration of the game. He had a couple rushing touchdowns. He had a couple passing touchdowns. He was very efficient. So, so what I'm getting to is, do we need to start thinking about Jalen Hurts possibly being the best quarterback in football. He is

K.B. 9:17
certainly in that conversation. And you know, just to go back a couple of the go back to the the argument that you were making just a moment ago, or the presentation you were making. Jalen Hurts was prepared or not. Jalen Hurts, saquon Barkley was prepared for they know what he has done all season. He has been outstanding this season, yeah. And so, I think the Chiefs organization, the coaches, that's something that they came into that game, game planning for. And so that aspect of their game, they succeeded at what they did not game plan for, clearly, was what they got from Jalen Hurts. They gamed plan for, how big that often? Massive line is, I think it's one of the biggest in the history of football. So they knew what they were getting in some of these verticals. They know, I'm sure they've watched tape on Jalen. Obviously, they've played Jalen, but who thought that he was going to put on the performance of a lifetime? I mean, he was magnificent. And

Graydon Prescott 10:19
here's the thing which, which I do not understand for the life of me, for Kansas City, they seemed really unprepared for Jalen Hurts. This is correct, first time they've seen him in the Super Bowl, right? Jalen Hurts went for 304 passing yards, the first time that they played the chiefs in the Super Bowl with no interceptions. And he had 70 yards rushing, 4.7 yards a carry, with 15 carries and three rushing touchdowns. So Jalen Hurts played one of the best games of his career to sneak up on him, right, right? So I don't get why they they looked like they had absolutely no game plan, no answer. Correct. So ever correct for what this dude like? You know what he does now, granted, it is quite unstoppable. He has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the league for the past few years, sure, but it looks like they didn't even give a second thought to him. They were just saquon. Saquon. Sake, one, saquon, saquon. Now, saquon was arguably and he won Offensive Player of the Year. He was probably the most unstoppable player in the league this year by far. Right.

K.B. 11:20
Oh, he broke. So it makes sense that they really game plan for him. But I agree with you 100% it's almost as if they took their eye off the ball with respect to Jalen, not recognizing this guy can hurt us too. And then add to that, he just has the game of a lifetime. I mean, staying in the pocket, you know, looking at the field, making the right decisions, running when he needed to run, getting the first down, when he needed to get the first down, you know, handing it off to say Quan to kind of head fake with respect to the the defensive line on the chiefs. I mean, he did everything that he needed to do to keep them off kilter. And then it seemed like Patrick did everything to keep his own team, you know, off kilter. I just right. He just couldn't seem to find a rhythm. You could see how, how frustrated Travis Kelce he was out there. I mean, it was just a bad performance all the way around. Not indicative of the chiefs at all. But wow, they picked a really big moment to lay a giant goose egg.

Speaker 2 12:18
Jalen hurt him that he did. Yes, no

Graydon Prescott 12:22
one very much. Jalen hurt on very Jalen Hurts, yeah, and the Chiefs had lost two games coming into the Super Bowl. Really won, because one of them, they played their third stringers the entire game and lost, right?

K.B. 12:37
They had lost two, and I think eagles had lost three, but one

Graydon Prescott 12:40
of those two was the last game of the season, and none of the starters played against the COVID. Broncos were fighting, right? So you can discount that one, right? So the Chiefs had lost one game, but they were in 11 one score games all year, and they didn't look like the chiefs that would blow you out, that had an explosive offense. They look they won by having great defense and having an offense that was good enough to get by, and then Patrick mahomes would make Patrick mahomes plays at the end, but in the Super Bowl, they were going against an offense where they had no answer defensively. Correct, you know, if you're going to try to stop saquon Barkley, okay, now, what are you going to do when Dave Vontae Smith and AJ brown or rushing or sprinting down the field, and Jalen Hurts is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Like you have no answer, their running game is unstoppable, and once you focus so much on the running game, that opens up the passing game for AJ Brown, Davante Smith, and like the Eagles, game plan was flawless. They knew exactly what the chiefs were going to do. And the chiefs, all year, they've been doing the same thing to teams all around the league, and they haven't played. They haven't played the Eagles. There's not a team in football that looks like the Philadelphia, right? Not one. They move differently. So as much as people were thinking, Oh, the chiefs are going to three feet, and I was one of the people who was supporting the idea that the chiefs were going to three people, when I I wasn't reflected on the game, and I look back, there was no way Kansas City was going to win that game, especially with the defense.

K.B. 14:06
Glad you mentioned that. I am glad you mentioned that, because I think that talk the lead up to this game, the multi week lead up to this game, and the Kansas City Chief fans, and even some of the players entertaining this idea of three peating, I think kind of contributed to them taking their eye off the ball, right? And I do know because they they've spoken about it since, that the eagles were really offended by all of this talk of a three peat I don't think that the Chiefs came into this with the right mindset, that this was going to be tough, it was going to be hard, and it they just needed to focus on that game, right? The consequences of that game, they are what they are, so we win, and it's a 3p Well, that just happens to be what it is, but the focus should have been on playing the best absolute football that they could for the duration. Operation of that game, and all of that energy, even the way that, you know, and it's not fair, but you know, there's a lot of talk and chatter about how Travis guilty came into the game, you know, pregame, how he was dressed in the tunnel, like it just seemed like they went a little to Hollywood, that they got caught up in this, this chatter about the repeating and lost focus of what they were there to do, which was going to be exceedingly difficult no matter what right. And the antithesis is, is true for the Eagles, they came in there very focused, laser focused on the job at hand. And it showed from the opening

Graydon Prescott 15:37
snap, I think, and I think you can hit the nail on the head here, the chiefs were trying to repeat. Philadelphia was trying to win a football game, correct? And one thing as a lot better myself a lot more focused than the other, Philadelphia was trying to win a football game. That is absolutely true. So with that being said, very anticlimactic Super Bowl. I'm happy for the Eagles. Jalen Hurts really deserved it. This was a focused team all year. They look great, and it was well deserved. And I honestly think that this is a team that could very easily, as long as they bring back all of their core pieces, they could go back to back, very sure they could. They're going to be great teams next year. The ravens are going to have something to say about that. Nourse got something to prove. The bills will be back. I'm sure the Detroit Lions will happen.

K.B. 16:30
The Chiefs may be back. I think it's been a humbling experience, and I don't think they're going to lose that focus. Yeah, yeah.

Graydon Prescott 16:36
And I think mahomes is going to come back with something to prove. Now, sure, because this was not this was not good on him. This was a blemish on his record. Big no doubt about it, big time. This was the worst game in his career. And he couldn't have picked the worst time to have the worst game of his career, absolutely. So he's going to come back looking a little bit different next year. This is great. And Prescott here on Sports prep live 91.5 HT to the beat. We have discussed the Super Bowl, and now we have to move on to some NCAA hoops. Oh, let's start on the men's side. Not much to say here, except that number one, Auburn got beat at home by Florida. A wire to wire victory for Florida. Another

K.B. 17:18
thing I just did not see that coming. Roose Pearl has had Auburn looking like a well oiled machine. Now

Graydon Prescott 17:25
look it. They lost to an SEC team number nine in the country. So it's not like they lost to an unranked team. I mean, Auburn is not Florida's a good basketball team. Auburn is not going to drop too far in the ranking, correct, because of that game. That game. Correct? It was one game. They had an off game. Okay, I'm not too concerned about that. Duke slipped and fell,

K.B. 17:49
figuratively and literally for Cooper flag, whom I love as a basketball player, Cooper flag is the truth. However, they slipped and fell. Yes, they got themselves into a bind and could not get out of it,

Graydon Prescott 18:02
so they were down to few seconds left Cooper flag drives right baseline, and he just slipped and fell and traveled. So Duke goes on to lose that game on the road to an unranked team. Yes, that is not a good look, that it's a much different look than losing to a ranked team like Auburn did, Duke loses to an unranked team. Their their ranking is going to take more than Clemson that they Yes, yes, so their ranking is going to take a little bit more of a hit. With that being said, that pretty much covers things on the men's side, Iowa State is finally out of their slump. And you know, I'm interested to see how the ranking they're

K.B. 18:41
costly. Slim, yeah, they dropped three, yeah, in a row. But,

Graydon Prescott 18:45
you know, we'll see how they will see how they fare for the rest of because they have some huge ranked wins. So I'm not too concerned about Iowa, yeah, you still don't. You don't want to go up against this ball club. Nor am I concerned about Duke or Auburn. It's just, you know, everybody caught them on the right day. Yeah, everybody has a day where you can get them,

K.B. 19:04
or a series of days. In the case of Iowa State, you just, yeah, you caught them at the right time.

Graydon Prescott 19:08
But those, those are teams that are going to be back. I'm not worried about them. Now. Let's talk about the women's side. And this is where things get really interesting. Yes, so this Thursday, we'll start here. We got a big one. We got number one, undefeated UCLA. UCLA, led by the one and only Lauren Betts right, versus falling the three losses number six, USC, who just lost to Iowa in

Unknown Speaker 19:39
Iowa, Carver Hawkeye Arena on

Graydon Prescott 19:41
the second of February, the day of Caitlin Clark's Jersey retirement. Yes, an unranked Iowa team. This is not the Iowa we've seen for the past four years, because Caitlin freaking Clark is gone, right? It's a big difference. But Iowa gets the job done. They defeat USC on the jersey. Retirement day, and it was big news, but USC, again, you caught him on the right day. Now, it was bold to schedule USC for the day of Caitlin Clark's Jersey retirement, but it worked out for Iowa, because, you know, you get a big ranked win in front of Caitlin, sure, sure, and all that stuff. That's all well and good. I'm sure that left a bad taste in us. C's mouth, and they're gonna have, they're gonna have to make a statement on Thursday against UCLA. The game will be played on us, sees home court.

K.B. 20:32
I'm not sure. Yes, it is. I'm not sure what statement I even thought of. I got UCLA. I've been I thought of going to the game, but then I, you know, it was kind of late for me, and looking at the tickets and some of the ticket prices. Now, this is a women's now, we're huge. As anyone who listens to the show is aware, we're huge women's basketball fan. We're basketball fans, men's basketball, women's basketball, you name it. But I was on, I think it was StubHub, and the lowest price ticket that I saw for this upcoming game this Thursday between the Bruins and the Trojans on the women's side, women's basketball, I think, was $734 Yeah, the lowest price ticket I saw available, yeah, like this is going to be a barn burner. They are right next door to one another. You know, both la teams, the biggest rivalry in college. Sure, Lauren bets, juju, Watkins. I mean, this is going to be epic. So if you get a chance to check this game out, it's interesting that you think, and I can't say that I disagree with you, that you think USC may

Graydon Prescott 21:36
pull this one out. I said, UCLA. Okay. You said UCLA, yeah, I look us.

K.B. 21:43
I think Juju Watkins feels like she's got something to prove and if she can do this. Because I believe, right now, UCLA is sitting at 22 or 23 and Oh, 23 wins for you, zero lines and zero. So it would be a huge win, just as big, if not, in fact, bigger than Iowa knocking off USC. The one thing I do want to say about that game where, you know, Caitlin Clark was in the house, David Letterman was in the house. I mean, it was just packed the recruiting, you see, I was, I was not very good right now, but the number of top recruits that they had flown in for this game. Who are considering the University of Iowa, or have committed to the University of Iowa. This team in the next year or two is going to be a problem. Yeah, they have got, and I am super impressed. They have got some, some high level recruits coming in that are outstanding. I mean, people that you would expect to go to a USC, or expect to go to a South Carolina or an LSU. I mean, just the top program or a UCLA, top programs in their country. In fact, one of the top players from made her day was in the house during that Iowa USC game. And she's out of California. You know, for those that, those of you that are unfamiliar with Mater day so Iowa, over the next couple of years, is going to return to being a powerhouse school in women's basketball. Yeah,

Graydon Prescott 23:07
absolutely. So look, you got the big star studded names at USC, juju, Watkins, Kiki Earth and Kenny Smith. And then you got the deep loaded Kennedy Smith, yes. Kennedy Smith, yes, and you got the deep, loaded team on UCLA, not as many huge names, but they just play well together. They haven't lost. They dominated South Carolina, and it's going to be a great game. Juju now, Juju and USC did get a big win this past Saturday against Ohio State, who's number nine in the country. They beat them by 21 Yeah, so that was a big win for for USC, but UCLA is a different beast. They've been it's another level. Yeah, they're cut above everybody else in the country. This year. They've beat the best team, yes, and they've proven themselves worthy of that number one slot. So this is going to be a big game, and I think the both teams are going to have something to prove. A lot of people expect to see a big performance from Juju or Kiki, but UCLA being the number one team in the country. You know, they want to prove why they are the number one team in the country.

K.B. 24:18
And the unfortunate news for everyone who does not play basketball at UCLA next to Lauren Betts, she's coming back next year. Yeah, that's like, Wow. She is coming back. She may have a chance to get back to back national championships. I mean, she is in contention for that. She is just phenomenal. She's already announced she's coming back. It's a problem. She's tough.

Graydon Prescott 24:41
Um, now there's a lot more going on on the women's side, so we gotta move past UCLA here. Notre Dame is now the number Notre Dame is now the number two team in the country, and the reason for that is that South Carolina lost to Texas, who was number. Four. South Carolina was number two. They lose 62 to 66 so now the top five currently stands as UCLA number one, Notre Dame two. Texas is three, South Carolina, four, and LSU was number five. LSU has only lost one game, and that was South Carolina.

K.B. 25:20
So but Texas is tough, I think at Maddie Booker, Madison Booker, Madison Booker, yeah, man, she wears Kevin's number, and he sung her praise. She's tough, yeah, she balled out in that game this week.

Graydon Prescott 25:31
Yeah, she had, I think, 28 points, yes. So look, Texas is good. They beat South Carolina now they were at home, but South Carolina hasn't lost a game to any SEC seven. Yeah,

K.B. 25:45
57 straight before they got knocked off by Texas. Yeah,

Graydon Prescott 25:48
since 2021 they haven't lost a game against an SEC opponent. Now, there was a couple that they should have lost, ie Tennessee last year in the big in the SEC tournament when Camilla Cardoso, Cardoso, yes, decides to hit her one and only career, right? I

K.B. 26:08
remember that shot. Yeah. Talk about a hope and a prayer,

Graydon Prescott 26:11
yeah? But regardless of how you win, a win is a win. So they haven't lost an SEO game in in four years. Now, I'm trying to do the math, realizing it's now 2025 right? So it's been four years, so we got a new top five. Like I said, UCLA, Notre Dame, who is my pick right now to be national champions. I'm gonna throw that out there. Okay, I love UCLA. What they're doing over there, Hidalgo is Notre Dame. Is cold, Notre Dame, and they kind of easily beat us, yeah? Like it wasn't much of

K.B. 26:47
a challenge. She's a pit bull. Yeah, yeah. She is a, I don't know how many people know about him. I think all go but she is a pit bull.

Graydon Prescott 26:53
If I think five foot nothing, I think Hannah Hidalgo is the best player in the country. She may be, not

K.B. 26:59
Juju. She may be, you may not get a lot of argument

Graydon Prescott 27:03
making. Yeah, they went ahead. They went head to head. Juju had, like they did. Juju had, what, 22 points. She's

K.B. 27:09
she's dropped 40 pieces. Like, she is incredible. Juju had 22 they went to head. She might be five, five on a good day, pit bull. She's tough.

Graydon Prescott 27:19
Like, Wow, she's good. So UCLA Notre Dame, followed by Texas number three, led by Madison, Booker cold, and then South Carolina, LSU, with USC coming in at number six. So we got a big week in the women's game, and I want to know who you got. You UCLA or SoCal.

K.B. 27:42
I am actually going to go like I said. I'm going to go with Juju. I think there's going to be an upset here. And I am a huge fan of Lauren Beth. She has been balling like you said. They are 23 and Oh, on the year, and they've played everybody. They're taking on all comers. But I feel like Juju may have something to prove they could cancel each other out. And if they do that, I would say the edge actually goes to UCLA. I agree. I agree. But I think Juju is going to be on one for this game. She knows a ton of eyeballs are on this. She probably didn't expect to lose that game in Iowa, so she is going to be ready for this challenge coming up against Lauren Betts, and it will be epic, if she can pull it off.

Graydon Prescott 28:25
All right. Well, we're gonna see what happens. Like I said, I got UCLA. So thank you everybody for tuning in to this episode of sports prep Live.
