Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. Sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellent in athletics.
Welcome back to sports prep live, ladies and gentlemen, I am your host. Great and press Scott today, we got quite a few things to cover. We're going to talk a little bit about All Star Weekend. We're going to talk about some college hoops, both on the men's and women's side, and we're going to give you guys a quick update on how hoops are going at UNLV, so a lot of basketball today, after a football focused episode last week. How's it going? Everybody? KB, is here? Welcome back. KB,
K.B. 0:59
oh yes, yes, let's get it pop it all right,
Graydon Prescott 1:03
we'll start with All Star Weekend. So the all star game was yesterday, and I found it actually quite entertaining. Different format. They had the three games. It was kind of a mini tournament. First team to 40 Correct? You had Candace is rising stars. You had Kenny's, you had Kenny's young stars, you had Shaq's, og Chuck's global stars. So these four teams competing in a little mini tournament, first team to 40 in each game, and they selected these teams. Right? These teams were drafted, except for candace's team. Okay, that was the winner of the rising stars tournament. The winner of that tournament got to, got to play tournament, correct? So yeah, Kenny shack and Chuck, for those of you who don't know Kenny Smith, Kenny the jet Smith, two time champion in 1994 1995 with the Houston Rockets. Charles Barkley, 1993 MVP of the NBA. He was with the Phoenix Suns when he won that one. And then everybody, he needs no introduction, correct? Big diesel, he'd be offended, yeah. So they drafted their teams, and Shaq kind of focused on drafting the older players. So before injuries, he had LeBron, he had Anthony Davis, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Damian, Lillard, he had Jason Tatum. This was an older, yeah. By older we mean in their elder states, yes, of the league except Jason Tatum, yes. But then post injury and Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown was not on Shaq's team originally. What happened was LeBron couldn't play in the game, that's correct, so they moved, they moved Jalen brown to Shaq's team, and then Trey young and Kyrie Irving, who were all star replacements, they just kind of filled the spots. Kyrie shaks, fittingly, he was an OG and then Trey young, he was on, I believe it was the global stars team, yeah, the team that they were playing against. They played in the championship for the championship round. Long story short, the most competitive game was actually the OGS versus the rising stars, not the young stars, the rising stars, Candace Parker's team. That game was only one by six points by Shaq's OGs. It was 41 to 35 Damian Nourse hit a three pointer to win the game in typical Damian Lillard fashion. The game before that was Kenny's, or, excuse me, Chuck's global stars versus Kenny's young stars. That was kind of a dominant performance by the by the global stars, which was to be expected. And then in the championship game, God bless America. The OGS, like they did, put it on the political stars. That was as an American basketball player to see, yes, it was Steph Curry man. He won the MVP. Steph Curry did his thing. He had 12 points, hit four threes, you know, just doing his Steph Curry thing, turning around threes, off court. Just, just what you would at, what you would expect from Steph Curry and entertaining. Absolutely. Jason Tatum did his thing. He had 15 points. And women,
K.B. 4:11
ya know, was serious about Dave Victor. Women Yama, yeah, two or three block shots. And rarely see in an all star. And he
Graydon Prescott 4:17
was frustrated at the end of the game because they gave up a Jason Tatum dunk for the OGS to win the game. And when he was heated like that, they gave up the donkey. He wanted to win. He was competitive as as one of the future faces of the league, along with, you know, Anthony Edwards and Shay, of course, Wendy, that's, that's a good thing to see. I agree that he is so passionate just about the all star game. And you know, we, we can't wait to see him for the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs, just to see a young guy like that with a competitive fire starting in the All Star game, that that's a very that's very good to see. And I
K.B. 4:55
think the NBA knows that they needed to change this format. You can't. Have a game like they did last year, I believe in Indiana. Yeah, it was in Indiana, Indianapolis, where there's an all star game, and between the two teams, we surpassed 400 points. Yeah, absolutely no defense being played. People running up and down the court, shooting threes, shooting half court threes, a lot of which did not go in, but some did. That's how you get to the 400 points. But it wasn't entertaining you. It starts out, everyone's feeling it. There's lots of dunks, great shots. But then after a while, because there isn't that competitive nature to the game, that it's just basically a glorified layup line, I think people started turning the channel, turning the TV off, and the NBA took notice of that. So this format this year is them trying to reintroduce some competitive aspect to the All Star game. Yeah, and they're off to an interesting start. I think there were some players that still feel like we just don't have this quite right, but it's certainly better than it was last year and far more competitive. Jason Tatum
Graydon Prescott 5:58
was one of those players who feels that they don't have it quite right, correct? He said, quote, I think the toughest part was when they stopped the game to do the presentation while we were kind of halfway through it, it was kind of tough to get back into. I agree. I don't think if you're going to play a tournament, it's fine if you have, like presentations at halftime, yeah, maybe once, but they did it after a quarter break. Yeah, you can't. You can't do that stuff once a team gets to 10 points or the 20 points, or to 30 or to 440 the game is over. But you know, you can't stop the game when a team gets to 30 and when it gets to 20 or 10, correct? You got to let them, which is what they did, which is what they do, other than time out, you got to let them finish the game and then do your presentations after the game or before the game, so that you're not throwing off the flow of basketball. I agree, and hopefully they correct that. So I'm not the biggest Jason Tatum fan, but I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment that it was kind of awkward that they were stopping the game to use presentations
K.B. 6:57
as a spectator. It was kind of an eyesore. It felt uncomfortable exactly, and you could feel for the players there. So hopefully they iron that wrinkle out next year. Other than that, I liked it, but I agree with you. I agree with Jason, do the presentation before the game. Maybe you do a little something at halftime, and then, of course, if you want to do something post game, along with the award ceremony, MVP championship, you know, going to the all star team that wins the championship. That's fine, but after quarters or after they reach 10 point intervals, was really kind of disruptive, yeah, so hopefully next year they iron that wrinkle out, because even as a spectator, it was kind of bizarre.
Graydon Prescott 7:35
And there has been some ideas floating around about a USA versus world format. I heard that. I want your opinion on this, and then I'll give mine. So what do you what do you think about a possibility of the USA versus world format? I
K.B. 7:51
don't know how that's going to work out. You will get, obviously, some talented players on the world side. You know, you've got your Giannis, you got shade jealous Alexander from Canada, obviously you got your Luca, you've got your jokic. So there can be competitive teams. But I think kind of, in this day and age, you know what's going on in the world, politically, I just don't think that that's good optics. So I am not a fan of that particular format. It will be interesting to see if that ends up coming to fruition. I suspect that it may not, but just in this political environment, it feels like you know, they haven't taken the they haven't read the room, right? And this may not be the year or the time for that kind of contrast or conflict, because that that could spark some, some feelings among, amongst the fans, that we don't want to to foster, we don't want to encourage. So that's my personal opinion. It's not something that I would do. Yeah,
Graydon Prescott 8:50
you took the political view on this. I'm just going to take the little bit more straightforward view. It doesn't make sense, because the math doesn't check out to a 12 on 12, USA versus world game. And here's what I mean. Giannis, All Star World. So that's one for the world. Victor, wembanyama, Carl Anthony Towns, Pascal siakam althin, sangoon Nikolay, ocaldus Alexander, so that's what? 6767, players from the World Team now, Trey young, Jalen Williams, Evan Mobley, Jaren Jackson, Tyler, hero. Darius garland, Anthony Edwards, Kate Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Anthony Davis, Jason Tatum, Damian, lower LeBron, Kyrie Irving, James Harden right. Kevin Nourse, step curry, Jalen brown point noted, all of those guys are Americans. The math you can't have 12 players from the world go against 12 players from the USA. When the previous year, out of the 24 players selected all stars. 17 of them were from the USA, right? It doesn't check out. So that, for me, that's the main reason you can't have that you can't have that game happen, because there are just more great American players than there are players from the
K.B. 9:54
world. Absolutely not to, not to say that there aren't great, yeah, no. Internationals,
Graydon Prescott 9:59
probably the three. Best players in the world are internationally right now, the honest Shay and joks, but
K.B. 10:03
the concern is the depth right of that player roster, right? And
Graydon Prescott 10:07
Luca will be an all star next year too, yes. But still, the sheer number of players that are representatives of the United States, that's why they have such a dilemma with the
K.B. 10:19
there's just two maybe, but maybe not right now, yeah, possibly in a few years. The
Graydon Prescott 10:23
great impressed got here on Sports prep live. We got a lot of things to discuss today. We are on 91 five, HD, two the beat, and we're about to talk about some women's college basketball,
K.B. 10:34
but before we do the highlight of NBA All Star Weekend, Mr. Mac McClung, this kid, it he came into the league. I think he was with the Warriors for a short stint. He's been in the G League. He was
Graydon Prescott 10:49
with the Lakers.
K.B. 10:50
Okay, since he's left the the NBA, he's he's still in the G League, doing his thing in the G league. But this kid has come on to the scene, and he is six foot nothing. He might be six two, and has hops out of this world, won his third straight This has never happened before, ladies and gentlemen, not with Michael Jordan, not with Jason Richardson, not with Carter. Vince Carter, not with Dominique Wilkins, it has never happened before that a dunk champion has three peated or even won three times
Graydon Prescott 11:26
that that that second part is not true. Nate Robinson has won three dunk contests, really. He is the only other person Nate Robinson wanted, but not three. Pete, no. He won 2006 correct, 2009 and 2010
K.B. 11:39
but another, another guy that's 596 foot nine. Yeah, he's in the fives, yeah,
Graydon Prescott 11:44
but we're not gonna talk about Nate Robinson, because I don't want to end up bringing up Jake Paul. So Ouch. So yeah, Nate Robinson won three, but only one and a half of those were really entertaining dunk content, like impressive dunks. He won a lot of points because he's five foot nine. I agree. Same with Spud Webb, yeah. Mac McClung, on the other hand, he's six two, but man tops man. Mac McClung can leap. I said this kid like I'm not five,
K.B. 12:13
right? But He's 20 in terms of NBA verbiage, yes, he's a young buck in the NBA, 26 so he's but in terms of his life cycle, yeah, yeah,
Graydon Prescott 12:22
yeah, he's, he's, he's a newer player, yes, but yeah, last three dunk contests, Mac McClung has won them all, and he's kind of been saving the dunk contest. Now, I will say this year Stefan Castle was sensational. I put up a great fight to Mac. I thought some of his dunks were even a little bit better than a couple of Max but, I mean, you jump over a car and
K.B. 12:44
do a reverse dunk, wow, wow.
Graydon Prescott 12:47
And then he had buddy on the on the he had him on the hover board doing a 360 Yes, and he jumped over him, grabbed the ball from a dude on a ladder, tapped that one in, and then dunked the other one. That's just, these are things we've never seen creative like, yeah, wheels,
K.B. 13:04
his height does not seem to indicate that he would be able to do physically what he's able to do. And I think that's what makes it so entertaining, and why he's he's developed such a fandom. Yeah, he everyone is pulling for this kid. And you really don't have to, because he is just one of the best to ever
Graydon Prescott 13:21
do. And I want to get this off my chest, a lot of people have been having a having a quick conversation on who did who did it better? Jumping over the car, Blake Griffin or Mac mcclong. It's not even close. It's not close. It's not even close. First of all, Blake Griffin jumped over the car, yes, and caught a lot. And didn't do anything special, doing a dunk. He just jumped over the hood and caught it, jumped over Mack jump car. Mack jumped over the car with the dude standing in the car, jumped cleared the dude who was probably a foot outside the car cleared, cleared him by a foot. Easy grab the ball and did a reverse dunk. It's not close. That might be one of the three to five best dunks I've ever seen. For me, number one is still Aaron Gordon going under both his legs and left handed and jumping over a mascot. That's impressive, but that, I think
K.B. 14:08
Kenny the jet Smith said it may be, and I don't know what he he was thinking about it. He's probably but he said it's the second best dunk. And he's been in all of these he it's the second best dunk he has ever seen. He
Graydon Prescott 14:20
was, he was either talking about Vince Carter's 360 windmill, which for me is not that's just nostalgic for the time. Correct was way ahead. He might
K.B. 14:28
be showing his age,
Graydon Prescott 14:31
but he if he was talking about the Aaron Gordon, any of the Aaron Gordon dunks really okay?
K.B. 14:37
And I agree. I think you know, Matt McClellan, what he has done, obviously, is unprecedented, but I do believe Aaron Gordon and Zach Levine still reign supreme as the best dunk contest, like the contest itself, yeah? Talk about the individual dunks, yeah? But the going mano, a mano head to head, it is the best dunk contest I have ever
Graydon Prescott 14:58
seen. Yeah, that's fair. Now, here's a question. In. Do you think if Mac McClung were to dunk against those two, both of them at the peak of their powers. Do you think Mack McClung beats them?
K.B. 15:08
I don't know if he wins, but man would I love to see it. Yeah, all three of them are not only super athletic, great wheels, meaning hops, yeah, but very creative. So I don't know who would win, but man, would I love to see it.
Graydon Prescott 15:23
Yeah, all right, we're gonna have to move on from All Star Weekend, because we got a lot of great things to talk about still. And we're gonna lead off with some women's college basketball. There is a new AP number one, and not because of anything that they did Notre Dame is the new number one team in the country. Yep, yeah. She led by Hannah had all go, scoring wise. But you know, she had a rough one. She had a rough go. She's entitled, yeah, she's in touch. She had a rough go. She's been putting in yeoman's work all year. But, you know, in 87 to 58 I think they beat 8759 they beat Pittsburgh and a dominant win. Olivia miles had 28 points on two threes. Uh, Hannah's due for, off night, which is, which is perfectly fine. Notre Dame is the number one team in the country. I said it before. I think Notre Dame is going to win the national champion at 22 and two, they are number one in the country now, with Texas being to Madison, Bucha, 16 and 10 against LSU and a huge win in the SEC and UCLA. Number three, I'm gonna take this one on the chin. I said UCLA would beat USC, I was wrong. You said Juju was gonna get it done. You were right. I'll take it
K.B. 16:29
on the chin. Yeah, it's interesting to say that. You know, Notre Dame is now number one, and that is not even the top two or three storylines coming out of women's college basketball this game, UCLA, USC, in, obviously, Los Angeles, because both teams are but it was a home game. It was at the Coliseum. Yes, a home game for USC, packed house. Kevin Hart was in the building having fun. Michael B Jordan, who was it? This was a spectacular game. It had everything that you would want to see. Juju Watkins put on a show, I think she dropped 28 points. Just unstoppable. Yeah, 3038 oh yes, yeah, my bad. You're correct. With eight
Graydon Prescott 17:09
blocks, rebounds and five assists, she was two blocks away from a triple double with blocks and had five assists, still with 38 points and 11 rebounds, it was unbelievable. That's a master class. And
K.B. 17:22
she she jumped all over them when they came out. Opened up the game. She had 25 at halftime, and UCLA Claude back. Lauren Betz was, was solid.
Graydon Prescott 17:31
UCLA is a is a deep team. They're not one player going for 40. UCLA is just a deep team. They're consistent. They're never going to go away. Lauren Benson, spectacular, but she's not a big numbers kind of girl. She's She's a very impactful player in the post. She'll give you 18 and 12 a game, but she's not going to go get you 40,
K.B. 17:55
right? And that's how they clawed back into this game. And it was competitive. There were ties, lead changes, all that sorts of fun stuff. And then in the last six minutes, Juju Watkins just took when you
Graydon Prescott 18:07
it's really helpful. When you have one player who you can count on to just go get go, get your bucket, it's really helpful. And you UCLA as much as they are a very consistent team, a very balanced team, I don't know that they have that one player that can just go get you a bucket. And I didn't take that into account. When I said that UCLA would win this game, I expected fully that their team would be able to overwhelm us. Sees team, but I did not account for the fact that Juju Watkins is Juju Watkins, sure, and she's average, 2425 this year, but, but she has something to prove. Wow. You know, a lot of talks about who's the best player in the country right now, with her, with Hannah, with page AZ Fudd might be entering that conversation, getting that conversation. We'll talk about that in a second. And then, of course, Lauren Betts and Lauren Betts, but Juju had a chip on her shoulder. Clearly, she played like she had something to prove. And, you know, I couldn't be happier about being wrong about a prediction. I mean, I'm as big as a USC fan as anybody, and I was just absolutely amazed by this game. It was just a spectacular performance on Juju part, and UCLA didn't play bad either. No, they did not. They played as a team. This was a radical this was a respectable loss, absolutely, for our number one, absolutely. And then we'll move on to, I don't know if it's bigger news, because the UCLA was the AP number one basically the whole season after they dethroned South Carolina. But to me, it's, it's a little bit more interesting news, South Carolina took their third loss of the season. Obviously. Number one was UCLA, and then they lost to Texas. Madison Booker had a master class in that one, and then they they played at home against against UConn. Oh my goodness, South Carolina hadn't lost a home game. In 71 games, records and fun page records, 12 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, almost a triple double, just, just a great, great, great performance, even without scoring the ball. You got us, you got to know that scoring isn't everything. She gave you 10 assists, she gave you seven rebounds. She was responsible for at least 40 points.
K.B. 20:19
Yes, just her presence on the court, she has high impact on the basket the outcome of a basketball game and
Graydon Prescott 20:25
easy FUD, 28 points, 18 in the third quarter alone, and they eke out a win against against the South Carolina team, they barely beat him, 87 to 58 ending
K.B. 20:36
a 71 home game win streak for South Carolina and about
Graydon Prescott 20:41
as dominant fashion as you could do. And Gino just completely outclassed Don Salee, which shocked me. Don Staley didn't make the adjustments that she should have made right Gino just pushed all the right buttons. This is a guy who's been through some controversy. Even on this show, we've had a lot of things to say about Gino Gino ariyama, because
K.B. 21:02
he always has a lot of things to say, and some of them should go unsaid.
Graydon Prescott 21:05
But there is no denying that this man knows how to coach doing. Yes, he does. Man of all the things that could have happened in that game, the last thing I expected was to for UConn to roll in to South Carolina and just completely annihilate the number two team in the country at the
K.B. 21:24
time. You know, look, you know, I recall you met AZ FUD like, when you were, like, nine, nine or 10 years old, yeah, so you've known about her for a minute. And I think because of her injuries, people do not remember, like, AZ Fudd was on the cover of ESPN magazine. When they had ESPN magazine, they did a big profile on her. I mean, she was that person in women's basketball in high school. Came out easy. Foot
Graydon Prescott 21:48
was a real she made Caitlin Clark look like yes she did an average player. Yes she
K.B. 21:52
did a Z FUD was tough. And then she had injuries to both knees, multiple injuries to both knees. And so she kind of fell off the radar just in terms of media coverage, and man, has she come roaring back. She is showing who she is. As a basketball player, she is a problem, and it's just only going to get worse for her opponents if they didn't know before, I bet you they know now, yeah, AZ FUD is the truth,
Graydon Prescott 22:18
34 against St John's. And then much more impressive, 28 against a defensive juggernaut that is South Carolina. AZ FUD has really, really improved her game, not from the like from the time I saw her in high school. She was a break you down, get to her spot, mid range, get to the basket, free throws like this was easy fuzz game. She was dynamic. She played basketball with force. Yes, you know, she was just a one of a kind player, similar to what Juju Watkins is, right? I think AZ Fudd and Juju Watkins would really be neck and neck. Had had a Z FUD not blowing her injuries. Yes, she was just tough and all fat into the game. But since her injuries, she's not able to she hasn't been able to move the same way, but she became probably the best shooter in the country, prolific shooter, probably the best shooter.
K.B. 23:09
I've seen her working with Steph Curry. I've seen her working with Phil handy. She is putting in work. And man, does it show
Graydon Prescott 23:16
man she she's not playing the same way that she used to, but she doesn't have to because she could. She's probably the best shooter in the country. She's shooting 45% on threes this season. She has handles man easy FUD is the truth. Yes, senior year for her, she's probably going to take one more year, just because she's had a couple of injury seasons, and
K.B. 23:37
they have moved into the forefront for the consensus favorite to win a national championship, I still got Notre Dame. I do not know Anna Hidalgo is tough, but, but this, this duo, a Z foot and Paige Beckers, is a problem for anybody, and they just demonstrated that you beat South Carolina by 29 points. The Score, ladies and gentlemen, on this game that we're talking about was 87 to 58 the worst loss that UConn has suffered under Don Staley since South Carolina. Or, I'm sorry, yes, the worst loss that South Carolina has suffered under Don Staley as a head coach. I mean, this was just a drubbing.
Graydon Prescott 24:16
Let's not let's not forget, Notre Dame and UConn have played this season, and Notre Dame won. They did
K.B. 24:21
so but, but AZ was not playing the way that she is playing now. So I would love to see actually didn't play in that game, correct, right? So I would love to see a rematch of that game, and that's probably what we're going to end up seeing in the national or in the national tournament. March Madness, yeah. Final Four, most likely. I suspect the outcome of last time will not be the outcome of this next game I'm riding. If they happen to play one,
Graydon Prescott 24:44
I'm riding with my Notre Dame national championship prediction. There's a fan of Notre Dame. I've got you coming. There's gonna be Notre Dame. There's gonna be Texas. UCLA is gonna be back, obviously, USC, Yukon, South Carolina. And I have my doubts about. South Carolina, I really do. But UConn and USC and UCLA, Texas, Notre Dame, those teams are going to be there, so is going to be very, very interesting to watch, but I'm still riding by my Notre Dame pick. Understandable, yeah, I just think they got a team that it's going to be hard for anybody to beat. This team has won 19 games in a row and LSU,
K.B. 25:20
right? You know, LSU is, all right, but 25 and two,
Graydon Prescott 25:23
yeah, but they haven't really played many teams. And then when they do play a somebody team, like a South Carolina, like a Texas, right? But only two losses. Only two losses. Okay, well, Notre Dame only has two losses. Agreed, agreed. All right, great, impressed. Got here on Sports prep live. We got one or two last things to cover. We got to talk a little bit about men's college basketball, and then the UNLV basketball update. You're listening to sports prep live on 91 five HD two the beats so quickly, let's go through men's college basketball. We got about three and a half minutes left here. Auburn managed to knock off Alabama to stay number one in the AP. What a game that was in the AP ranking, yes. So they've been number one for six weeks in a row now, after dethroning Tennessee as the number one team in the country a few weeks back, after Tennessee took a 30 point loss to Florida, so Auburn now obviously still the number one team, led by Johnny Broome, who has been spectacular this year, he is one of the two top wooden award from contingent wooden award, along with Cooper flag out of Duke, yep, number three team in the nation. They're up to in the last the most recent poll. They went from fifth to third. They jumped. They jumped Alabama and they jumped. I believe it was Tennessee who they jumped. It may
K.B. 26:45
have been. Yes, Tennessee is down too. Yeah. And speaking of Duke and Cooper flag, I am hearing that Cooper flag again, one of those two consensus players for the wooden award recipient this year, college player of the year, Cooper flag, who is having a spectacular year, would probably go number one if he entered the draft, has indicated that he may be staying on campus, that he may go another year so that he can play with the Bucha twins. He Hayden and Cameron. He
Graydon Prescott 27:15
said that he likes, he likes feeling like a kid, yes, as a college student, and that's obviously understandable. I'm just going to go out on a limb here. He's going to the draft. He's going to get drafted because he's projected number one overall. You're you're going to make millions of dollars. I just don't see a reason he wouldn't go declare for the draft, but national championship, that could be a reason, maybe. But they got a good chance of winning it this year. They do, yeah? So if they win it this year, he's for sure gonna get drafted. If they don't, I think the odds are still that he will get go to the draft, but a the Boos are twins and Cooper flags along with the other Duke recruits coming in. It's a dangerous team, and I don't really see anybody in the country who can stop that team from winning a national championship. Yes, so yeah, that ought to be very interesting. And that's a great story. And
K.B. 28:05
then quickly, our very own UNLV rebels, women upside who are doing the darn thing in hoops. Yep. 21 guard Kiera Jackson just dropped. What? 27 points against San Diego State. Yes. Rebounds, five rebounds, nine assists. I mean, putting in work. So shout out to them. There they are number one in the conference.
Graydon Prescott 28:28
These ladies can play. Yes, I need them on that. AP, top 25 they've snuck on a little bit last year, but this year they haven't been shown any love. They need to be on that. AP, top 25 they deserve to be there for
