Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live, sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellence in athletics.
Graydon Prescott 0:35
Hello everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. I'm your host, grade and Prescott. And today we get to talk about UNLV in three different aspects, football, women's basketball and men's basketball. And also, there's been some controversy in the sports world, especially regarding Texas A and M and their game against South Carolina, but we'll get to that later on in the program. First, we're going to start with the UNLV men's basketball team, whom I've had the chance to attend a couple of their games now and so far through the season, two wins, two losses, loss against a team that they shouldn't have lost to in UT Martin and a win against Chattanooga, 101 to 69 in a blowout. Not much to take away from that game, except that their offense can play at a high level when they play well together. And then just just in the last two days, they played against the Memphis Tigers, who came into the season as the number 23 ranked team in the country. And UNLV went on to their home turf and took a W 92 to 78 big congratulations to coach passenger and the rebels for that monumental victory that's going to do a lot for their confidence going forward in the season. KB, again, welcome back to the show. It's probably I was waiting for that. Yeah, it's been a couple of weeks, hasn't it? What? Better late than never, right? My bad. What were your biggest takeaways from their first four games of the season, having seen Coach Pastner system a little bit and seeing this team try to gel early in the early parts of the season two and two, what have been your takeaways?
K.B. 2:13
Well, I think there was always going to be a bit of a ramp up, and that is to be expected. Guys coming together and haven't necessarily played with one another, brand new coach, new system to learn players out on injury, so several players on IR. So this is kind of what I expected, I think that they've been able to kind of turn things around, obviously, for him to go into Memphis. And I believe coach passner used to coach in Memphis. He did, so, you know, to go in, and that's Penny Hardaway. Penny knows what he's doing, yeah. He's a good coach. That is a big win. So sure, I didn't, I didn't think they should have dropped one to UT Martin, yeah, but UT Martin has some flame throwers on that squad, and
Graydon Prescott 2:57
they also lost to Montana. Correct, correct. Not not a good one to drop either.
K.B. 3:01
They probably should have won that one as well. But again, I'm seeing J curve growth, you know, a little bit of a dip, but then now it seems like, you know, the sky is the limit. A really big win in Memphis, Tennessee. I was happy to see that happen. And they got what Coach Pastner always talks about, always preaches about those seven and three, you know, three different stops, three stops in a row, on seven different occasions. And they were able to do that and that, and they were able to do that in the last game that they won. So he's laid out, you know, the kind of the pathway for them, and I think if they follow it, they get that chemistry, which you're starting to see a little bit more of, they're going to be just fine. They have a lot of talent on that team. It is just working out the cobwebs, working out the kinks, again, establishing the chemistry. And once that happens, and it takes a few games, once that happens, I think the Running Rebels are going to be just fine. Yeah,
Graydon Prescott 3:53
absolutely. I completely agree. I think one of the biggest turnarounds that I've seen for this team so far, as opposed to last season, and last season, they went 18 and 15, right, but they were a more defensive focus team per se. They allowed 68 points per game, and they scored 69 points per game, which 69 points per game was one of the lowest scoring totals of any team in the country. Right now, UNLV has scored 81 101 93 and 92 so they've got offense, they've got offense. They need to nail down the defense correct. And once they do that, they're going to be set to be, if not, a very, very competitive team, a strong team in the Mountain West. I think that was the big goal for this year. You want to be competitive in the Mountain West and grow from there. This is their first season. It is a completely revamped and new look roster. It's a very high powered offense, as we've seen so far. Their defense has been atrocious, a lot of talent, but this is a good team, good pieces, and I think once they figure out that defense and their defensive strategy, this team can make some noise. So I've liked what I've seen so far, Sure, absolutely. I have the Running Rebels on the men's side, and, you know, big congratulations to Coach Pastner for a huge victory this past week. Absolutely. They play again Thursday, November 20, back at Thomas and Mack Center, against St Joseph's. Look. St Joseph is a program who's made an NCAA tournament run in the past couple of years. Sure, sure, this isn't a this is no
K.B. 5:19
pushover. It's not a gimme, but
Graydon Prescott 5:22
they should witness. We expect to win. Hopefully we can improve to three and two above 500
K.B. 5:28
I think they're figuring some things out, and a big part of that is the chemistry buying into coach passenger system. This coach knows what he's doing. You've sat down and talked to him, yeah, he's had a storied career. He's won championships like he knows what he's doing. And of course, another gentleman you'll be talking to in the not too distant future, Stacy augment brought Stacey on, another gentleman who knows what he's doing, knows the game of basketball, brought a championship to this school. So listening to those two generals, I think these guys are going to and I fully expect that these guys are buying into what they're being told by their coaching staff. They've got some other coach coaches who have also played at UNLV or played d1 basketball, so they've got the leadership set, and it's and I think they have the talent there, but you're right. Get the defense going. It is a high powered offense, and I think they can do just about anything they look forward or anything they're looking to do in terms of their conference and maybe even terms of the top 25 rankings, they might be able to crack into that as well.
Graydon Prescott 6:29
Absolutely. We'll see. We'll see how that goes for them. Now, speaking of a team that probably should have and could have cracked into that top 25 Yes, as soon as last weekend, or as recently as last week, Friday. Friday, to be specific, is the rebels women's basketball team, right? UNLV, rebels on the women's side who played against the number seven Baylor. Baylor band. We talked about this game last week, and we said that we needed people to show up and show out, and we were going to shock the world and beat Baylor. I'll give it this. People showed up and showed us. They did loud. Yes, it was loud. It was jumping. The DJ, had it? Had it going? Some good music in there. And the game was a really good game. And I'm going to be honest, you and Elvis should have won that game. Sure, they really should. Six point lead going into the fourth quarter, and with two minutes left in the third I thought they had the game. One pretty
K.B. 7:23
much, which harkens to how well they played, how well coach LaRock coached this game. Yeah, she was into every single minute of the game, every single possession made, all the right calls. I kid you not. Some free throws didn't fall. They did. And I, you know, I hate to bring up, you know, the refs and the role that they play in games, because it becomes cliche, almost, but they really did make some horrible calls that went against the home, really shocking to see. But at the end of the day, you know, the the women, the lady rebels again, still not fond of that name, but the women's basketball team, there were some free throws that they could have made that they didn't. One of their players
Graydon Prescott 8:06
got hurt. Yeah, that that we need to go. That was huge, because she
K.B. 8:11
was balling. She had she was a problem.
Graydon Prescott 8:15
She was 16 points deep, I think, eight of which came consecutively. Yes, the third course, and it was a close game, pretty much throughout. I think Baylor had like a six point lead at one point, and then you and LV went on this 17 to two run, right? And it was jumping in there. They were hitting transition threes. And by the time the third quarter ended, it kind of felt like, oh my goodness, UNLV are about to do this. Yeah, they're gonna win this game. And fourth quarter starts, and on the first or second possession of the fourth quarter, Jasmine lot, who is coming off of a missed season with a torn ACL right, she wears a brace on her knee. She injured her knee. And I think what happened, and I was having a conversation with an analyst on channel three, named Brian and I, we think what happened was a player dove on the leg, right, because it was a loose ball, yeah, yes, it was a loose ball. And a Baylor player dove near the leg, or on the leg, and there was contact, sure, and it triggered her and her She immediately, because the mind can do this, she immediately thought the worst, yes and yes. And she's thinking, oh my goodness, I tore my ACL again. Probably had some pain, right? And there was, and there was probably a little bit of pain there, and it was definitely amplified by the horror of going through that, having traumatizing experience, absolutely. So she comes out of the game, and you can slowly see that lead starting to disintegrate, and then on some Willis Reed, she comes back into the right, right, and she scored again like immediately she she got back in, balled. She got back in and took the first shot. It was in and out. Then she came back down and scored. So she ended with 18 points, but she made their only field goal of the fourth quarter. It was something. Listening, and she only played like three minutes because she was out with an injury. Yeah, that was a big loss. She was out for a good stretch. They shot one for 18 in the fourth quarter, and 10 of those were layups. And her only bucket in the fourth or the only bucket in the fourth quarter was a mid range shot on her, on Jasmine.
K.B. 10:16
You know, a lot of times in sports, especially in basketball, you know, we talk about a person having a lot of gravity on the floor, and Jasmine has a lot of gravity. And what that means for those who are uninitiated is that she draws a lot of attention. And because she because she is a baller, yeah, yeah. And because she draws so much attention, it opens up opportunities for the other players on the floor, her teammates, but when you take that away now, all of a sudden, the defense can kind of lock in in a way that they couldn't when she was on the floor. And even though she has that knee brace on, she's quick. She gets to the basket, she gets she has a quick perspective. Yes, she's very aggressive. So having that going for you, that really is what kind of changed the tenor of the basketball game when she went down and playing, the way that she played is what changed the tenor of the basketball game when they were behind. And you said they went on that 17
Graydon Prescott 11:13
sparked that run, yes, and then you could, you could tell it was a difference in body language when she sparked that run. Then her teammates start to get behind her, and now everybody's playing, sure, sure. And the next thing you know, it's like a it's like a boulder rolling downhill. It's impossible to and this is what happened to them. They got themselves into this whole this shooting hole in the fourth quarter, and it's impossible to roll the boulder uphill. But when it's when you're when you're at the top of the hill, say, a tie game, and you start rolling it downhill, which is what happened in the third quarter for them? Because a lot easier, there comes an avalanche, yes, and that's what happened. So it was, it was definitely a tale of two extremes between the third quarter and the fourth quarter, where the third quarter was one of the best basketball displays I have ever seen, or Sure, the fourth quarter was one of the most challenging it was, yeah, it was one of the most demoralizing quarters around, because it felt like there was a lid on the rim too. Every shot was almost going and
K.B. 12:05
out. And I think some of that now, when she when she got up, I saw you at the game, when she got up, she was walking a little bit. She She was walking gingerly. What? Better than I thought she would have, she the way she was on the because I had, I think the teammates were still concerned for her, and I think that that that's also a psychological trigger, like, you know, we don't know what's going on with our teammate, and that kind of takes you out of your element for a little bit. Yeah, it does, and you just couldn't afford that in that game, that's hard. It's hard to stay focused when you worry about your teammate. They
Graydon Prescott 12:34
had a five or six point lead when I went down right and with her on the game, with her in the game, it felt like that was enough to control. Felt insurmountable, yes. But with her out, that immediately becomes, it evaporate. It goes from they're up by six and this could become 12 to they're only up by six. That's two shots, yes. And that, that was the difference played out. That's how the team's body language looked after she went down, because the confidence was just gone after she went. You
K.B. 13:02
almost saw a complete role reversal right in how aggressive Baylor became without her being on the floor, and how I'm not gonna say timid, but they were. They took a step back. It was the rebels took a step back. It was when they didn't have Jasmine on the floor. It
Graydon Prescott 13:19
was I'm now, I'm not comparing this girl to this basketball legend, but it was similar to the Warriors right now. They're almost undefeated with Steph Curry on the on the court, and they're playing horrible without him. And yesterday, he had one of the worst games of his career, and they won the game at 25 right? But that's just how they play with him on the court, but the rebels were playing so much better. Just having Jasmine on the court, sure, sure, everybody was playing better. It freed everybody up right to know, right? They have an option that they can fall back on to just go get a bucket when we need Right, right.
K.B. 13:54
And excellent handles. She makes good decision making. High basketball. I mean, this girl, you're taking her away a lot when she's not on the floor, it isn't just scoring.
Graydon Prescott 14:05
Now, the bright side for them is, I don't think a she came back into the game, correct, but when she went down, I had a really good angle. I was baseline near side, so I was probably 20 feet from her. When she went down, she went down in the right corner, closest to the exit at the Pavilion, and she loose ball. Two players dive at it. She didn't dive. She reached down. Probably has to do with her knee, yeah, and, you know, player clipped her leg, and she was down for a minute, and it just, you could hear a pin drop in there. And when she got up, she was holding on to two people and limping and only putting pressure on sure strong leg, protecting the knee a little. But then she put her foot down, and once she put her foot down, she kind of, I don't know if she told them, but she let go of the two people and walked to the locker room on her and see maybe she surprised herself in that Wait a minute. So this might not be as bad as I would. Speak, right? So her coming back into the game, I think, spoke volumes about the type of player she is, but also the bright side for you and LV being she's gonna be okay. She's not. This isn't a season for her. So look a lot of things to learn from, a lot of good takeaways for the game, for you and LV, and now they know that they can compete at that
K.B. 15:22
level, you know? And I'll say something, because we talked about it on the program, we've been egging people on for the last couple of weeks leading up to it. A lot of it had to do with, and I'm going, I'm talking about the attendance, a lot of that had to do with who they were playing, number seven player in the country. But right? You know, I You're not patting yourself on the back, but I think, you know, you letting students know that, hey, this is, this is a game that we need to show up and support this squad, this ladies basketball team, is a really, really good basketball team. They deserve the support. The tickets are free, not only for UNLV students, but for high school students. All you need to do is bring your your school ID, and people showed up. They showed up and they supported. And so I was really impressed with and I think it was a sell out crowd. Yeah, that way, yeah. So again, some of that has to do with or a lot of it has to do with who they played. But I also think, you know, you can toot your own horn a little bit. You talking about the need for the student body to be there cheering on their their comrades, their unle Comrades, and they did that. I saw a lot of students in the building. The energy was electric. It was a great game. I think it was an eight point difference, but it was much closer than the score. Yes, absolutely. Because, of course, there was fouling at the end, trying to preserve the time on the clock. But it was a really well played game, well coached game. And they showed me a lot. And I was impressed, even in a loss, I was impressed by the UNLV women's basketball team.
Graydon Prescott 16:47
Yeah, well, I appreciate the props. And yeah, that eight point spread the game was a lot closer because for some reason UNLV couldn't throw BB into the ocean in the fourth quarter. They do take on Montana State tomorrow night they're at Montana State. So this isn't one where we urge everybody to come out, you know, I'm not, if you can do it, you do, yeah, I'm not gonna tell you to drive to Montana, right? But, you know, if, if you want to, that's your prerogative, you but not going to tell you to let us know Montana, right? So hopefully they take the dub. That game is at 6pm tomorrow. It's great. And Prescott here on Sports prep live, and we have the privilege of discussing unlvs basketball on both the men's and women's side. We've done that now. We're moving on to football for the rest of the program. Yeah, just UNLV, but some news coming from the south side of the country. We'll get to that in a minute. UNLV football back in the win column, eight and two. Now, after a thriller against Utah State,
K.B. 17:42
I saw you in the building the other night, yes, again, yeah. I saw you on the field,
Graydon Prescott 17:47
yeah, Saturday, doing your thing, yeah. It was good. It was a good time. They took the dub, 2926 I had the privilege of on field, access media, all that stuff. So it was, it was, it was a really good time. They got off to a pretty bad start, but they rallied. Coach Mullen is a very persistent coach. This is a persistent team, and they improved their record to eight and two game winning drive in the fourth quarter. Utah State drops to five and five. UNLV, four and two in the Mountain West now third in the conference. So hopefully they can push that to second and they'll have a chance at the Mountain West. Chance. Mountain West championship. And it looked they played a great game, not their best offensive game, but they did not allow 50 points this time, right? So the defense stepped up in the second half. Yes, they did, and the offense still over 400 total yards. So all told, good game for them. Probably a little bit closer than it needed to be, but it's a great win, and I'd love to see it was them pulling out the close
K.B. 18:47
games, and we can talk about it now, because, you know, they won. I do think one of the I'm gonna say, bone headed executions, I agree with the play call, but the way that I was
Graydon Prescott 18:58
executed the fourth and 1/4 it was fourth and 1/4, and one, and they called a QB draw right up the middle, yeah. First of all, if you're gonna go up the middle, give it to a running back, second of all, yeah. First of all, if you're gonna give it to a go straight up the middle, give it to a running back, yes. Second of all, everybody on the planet would be expecting something right up the middle, right?
K.B. 19:19
Because he had been running, and he is good runner, yeah, yeah, no, no, yeah. Like, he's got some legs, he's got wheels. He is a good runner. But the thing is, it was almost as if you telegraphed it. I think everybody in that building knew you were going to keep them all.
Graydon Prescott 19:30
And there were two time outs leading Utah State called a timeout right before they stopped it the first time. And then they called a timeout, right? And so there were probably four minutes between the third and long, or the third and long and the fourth and one, right? And you know, all this time is going by and I'm just sitting there like I'm in the press box, so I had a view of the whole stadium TVs in there. I'm thinking, please don't run it up the middle and look, they ran it up the middle. They didn't get it. But. That was not the most boneheaded play of the game, because Utah State tried to fake a field goal
K.B. 20:03
and, Oh yes, yes.
Graydon Prescott 20:07
Mind you, they would have won. They would have won the game. Yes, thinking linearly, absolutely right, would have won the game. I almost forgot about that. Utah State tried to fake a field goal late, late first half. That was, that was pretty bad, yeah, and it wasn't, it wasn't fourth and short either it was like fourth and 13, and they tried to fake it, and that just went absolutely nowhere. Yes,
K.B. 20:28
I did forget about that. That was a horrible play call. Yeah, that was bad. It looked like it was a blooper reel. I just could not believe in that moment was right trying to execute.
Graydon Prescott 20:38
That was right after UNLV tried the QB draw, correct. So those were back to back possessions, because UNLV had a turnover on downs in the Utah straight. State tried to fake a field goal on fourth and 13. So it was, it almost washed away, correct?
K.B. 20:52
The Yes, the money looking a lot better after, after their blooper reel, right? All right, because of what Utah State attempted to do. It was just a cluster of a sequence, yeah, but we are glad they got the win. Shout out to coach Mullen. Shout out to the whole UNLV football team doing the darn thing. A gritty win too. Yeah, double overtime, 2926 but it was, you know, we were in the house. It was fun to be there. It was a great game to watch. And again, it had some some takeaways that you just could not help but mention, because that was a little portion there. I think going into
Graydon Prescott 21:33
halftime almost look like a circus. More
K.B. 21:35
it did, but it worked out well. Shout out to Yeah,
Graydon Prescott 21:39
you win the tough ones. You win the easy ones. All that matters is you get the win, and that's what they were able and they're playing again this week. Yep, Friday the 21st at 730 Hawaii. Hawaii is a good team. Micah alahado, yes, Gorman, Gorman, Gorman alum, ladies and gentlemen. Dude is
K.B. 21:58
a problem. Dude is no joke, no joke he has played in this building. Oh yeah, he's won a state championship in this building. Not one. How about four? Yes, yeah, like about four. He is for real. So I expect actually, whether it's UNLV
Graydon Prescott 22:16
supporters, students, I think it's gonna be a shootout, but a lot of Las Vegas. People gonna come out to check Hawaii? Absolutely So. UNLV football, Friday the 21st Be there or be square. The men's basketball plays on Thursday the 20th. So you can make both games big week. Yeah, I think
K.B. 22:34
even women's volleyball plays huge weekend. UNLV sports coming into Thanksgiving week, next week. Any, any that you can love to have your support.
Graydon Prescott 22:43
Women's Volleyball worthy of it. Women's Volleyball also 6:30pm at Cox pavilion. They're playing simultaneously with men's basketball. But Cox pavilion and UNLV, or in Thomas and Mac, are connected. So sure, sure you had in both sides. Absolutely they deserve it. Great week in UNLV sports, all told, two wins. Men's Basketball got a big win, and football got a big win. Women's Basketball had a great game. Had one in their fingers, and it just slipped away, but still a great game. Great game. Now let's talk about Texas, A and M, wow. And and this is wow. This is the this is the part of the program where the controversy comes into play. I wanted to talk a little bit about shadora Sanders having a really bad game in his first start, which
K.B. 23:28
I do not blame. I put a lot of that on the browns, like, come on. Kevin Stefanski, what are you doing? Yeah. I mean, he had no reps coming into this game, and if you are a backup. Qb, so maybe we spend a few minutes on this. If you're a backup. Qb, you need to make sure that that person that you're going to go to in the event that something happens, and your lead Qb, right now is also a rookie, yeah. There is no question that your backup QB, who is a rookie, should be getting reps with the first team, yeah, it'd be different if they your, your main QB was Josh Allen. It'd be different if it was Baker Mayfield, right? It'd be different. You know, there's any number of quarterbacks out there who are talented, you know, Patrick mahomes, then I understand that second Qb, you know, of course, Lamar Jackson. I understand that second QB not getting any reps, but when your primary is a rookie and your backup is a rookie, yeah, it may be a 7030 split. Heck, it may be an 8020 split, but you still need reps. But the guy still needs reps, and he played the way he played, demonstrated he didn't have reps. And I do not hang that loss. I do not hang that performance on and we keep it a buck on this show. I do not hang that on. That young man, shadur, was put in a horrible position, and that is solely the fault of Kevin stavansky and the the the administration, coaching coaching staff, the. There at the browns. It was utterly ridiculous. There is not anyone that speaks contrary to the the or speaks to the contrary on this particular issue. Yeah, it was an abysmal decision. He should have gone in there with reps. I think he's going to get them coming into this weekend. Dylan Gabriel may be back. I think he's in concussion protocol if he but I think he's going to be okay. But if he's cleared, whether he clears or not, should do or has to get reps, and because there is a likelihood that he's going to play those reps, probably should be in that 6040, range, if not 5050,
Graydon Prescott 25:32
yeah. And look, I don't think I could have said it any better. And this is a this is an issue where everybody gets kind of coming down on the same side. Now, the other issue that everybody's going
K.B. 25:42
down on the South Carolina ATM,
Graydon Prescott 25:45
South Carolina and Texas A and M, as
K.B. 25:48
if there wasn't enough drama in the game. Sorry, this game was sensational.
Graydon Prescott 25:52
Yeah. So here's how it went. In terms of pure football, just football, Texas A and M was down 30 to three at half. This game was incredible. And then they scored 28 in a row. Yes, but that's not the story. Towards the end of the half, Nick harbor a ride receive a wide receiver for South Carolina caught a touchdown, and he kind of limped towards the back, headed in the tunnel right holding his concern that he might have pulled his hamstring. Teammates came to check on him. He was all good. They walked back onto the field, and a state trooper on duty for the game walked into him, Texas State Trooper, yeah, he walked into him, bumped him, reached like, reached out and bumped into the dude, then turns around, pointing at him and, you know, calling him boy and all this stuff, yes, and the props To Nick Harper, because he was he handled
K.B. 26:42
it, measured. He was in control. Yes, he didn't do anything that. He just removed himself from the situation. Yes, he handled this. Was, this was an ugly incident, yeah, and, you know, I've known a lot of athletes, I've known a lot of police officers over the years, many of which are good guys, but all of them are not. And this is evidence of this. And the sad thing about this, you know, LeBron spoke on this, Stephen A Smith smoke spoke on this, Ryan Clark spoke on this, yeah. I mean, it was, I saw ochre. Cinco speaking on this, Shea speaking on this. I mean, this was ugly. And the the thing that really breaks my heart is of all of the African American men, whether they're athletes or not, this was not surprising to them to see this happen with a guy in uniform. And technically, he was not on, he was not on the job. They get to wear their uniforms as a courtesy. He's a private hire when he's at these at these games. Not a lot of people know that, yeah, you get to wear that uniform because it's a deterrent. But you're being paid privately. You're not in the role of a police officer when you're there. So for him to have done that, yeah, to this young man, and it was purposeful. It was intentional, and it was ugly. And I hope if I don't expect him to get fired, I'm not into being canceled and but I do not think that he should ever work another stadium football game. It was egregious. It was ugly. If you don't know about it, please look it up. But it breaks my heart that it shocked the heck out of a lot of people, and then a whole nother group of people were like, what we see this? Yes, what else is new we see this far too often?
