Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. Sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellence in athletics.

Graydon Prescott 0:35
What's up, everybody and welcome back to sports prep live, the final episode of season, five of sports prep live. I'm your host, grade and Prescott. In today, I'm here with kB. Let's get the introduction out of the way quickly this time, because it took me about two

K.B. 0:48
minutes last All right, that's all right.

Graydon Prescott 0:51
Kb is here. And today we get to talk about a couple of things, three UNLV sports teams, men's basketball, women's basketball and football. And then we have some controversy in the sports world, some involving John Morant, who's been a topic of discussion a couple years ago in the past. And then Michael Porter, Jr had some comments that he made. I actually think we start with the controversy this time. We normally keep that for the end. Okay, I think, I think we start with the controversy. So we'll start with clay Tom, yeah, there's a lot to say exactly. So we'll start with Klay Thompson, jamarat, yes, the Mavericks played the Grizzlies a couple of days ago, and John Morant was out with a calf injury again, right? He's missed a lot of time in his career, and after the game, he had some things to say to clay Thompson. He called him a bum and and then at a press conference, he interrupted Pat Spencer, who had a career game, yes. And he said, Oh, tell him who the best shooter is. It's not old boy from Golden State, correct, correct. First of all, Clay had six threes that game and 22 points. So I don't know why he would say that about a guy who had 22 more points and

K.B. 2:02
four championships, but, yeah, we'll set that aside for right.

Graydon Prescott 2:06
And look, Clay is a four time champion. He's a multi time all star, MVP or not MVP, but you know, an all defensive player. He was a key contributor to every champion, absolutely. And like, Clay wasn't

K.B. 2:18
just he not gone down. Yeah, against Toronto, you could argue he'd probably have another one.

Graydon Prescott 2:24
Yes. But look, Klay Thompson is a legend. He's a top 75 player of all time, undisputed, pretty much. Well, he didn't make the top 75 list. He was voted number 77 correct, but he should have made that yes, he should all know, yes, he should have list. But Klay Thompson is a legend, and John Morant is not a legend. He, no, he's not. He had superstar potential at the beginning of his career, and he got off to a fast start and won Rookie of the Year. And he was a good player, great player, actually

K.B. 2:51
had an opportunity to become, if not the one of the one of the best faces of the league, absolutely, and has his own

Graydon Prescott 2:59
shoe right, which I don't know how long that's gonna go.

K.B. 3:03
Yes, they don't hand those out easily. Over at Nike,

Graydon Prescott 3:05
Cade Cunningham is getting one correct. John Moran is not. Cade correct, but John Rand then started flashing guns on Instagram Live. Got suspended for eight games. Did it again? Got suspended for 25 games, then he got out for the season with an injury. He missed a lot of time last year with an injury. So John Moran has not been a guy who's

K.B. 3:24
been available, none of which the quote, unquote bum, yeah, has ever come close.

Graydon Prescott 3:31
Klay Thompson missed time was like, I don't know if I've ever a legitimate injury, yeah, I don't know if I've ever heard of Klay Thompson being suspended. I don't even know if I've seen him get a technical foul. Clay Thompson missed time. Was a tourney, Cl, and then he tore his Achilles, correct, and he came back and he won a championship, correct here. So Klay Thompson is a guy who needs to be respected. And after the game, John Morant and clay, Thompson had an interaction. John Moran called clay a bum. And clay, you know, went on a press conference, and he basically said, Look, you know, ja, we know who he is. He's been running his mouth since he got into the league, and you know, he's a guy who hasn't really done much, but it's disappointing, because you saw the superstar potential at the beginning of his career, but then, you know, some bad decisions.

K.B. 4:15
This was in the wrong direction. You are absolutely right. Gray this. And this was a better answer, a more favorable answer, a more political answer than most people would have given. I certainly, certainly wouldn't have given the answer that Klay Thompson gave. It was diplomatic, it was respectful, but true. I think it was the right answer, yes, but you could have went in on John Moran. I mean, there are people, and now we're getting to the point where can I say that these people are wrong, right? There are a lot of voices out there that flat out, call this guy a thug, and we know a lot of times when we're talking about African American players, African American young men, the word thug is a colloquialism for something else. Right? And I cannot separate myself from the notion that maybe this guy is beginning to play to type, and that's not something that I ever wanted to admit about John Moran. John Moran does behave like a thug. You're waving guns on Instagram. You're suspended 25 games. You come out and you engage in that type of behavior. Again, you are. You have one foot in and one foot out of your organization, disrespecting your coach. So your coach sits you down, just to let you know I am the person in charge here, superstar or not a coach, mind you, who has been over in Europe and won championships, right? So the coach knows what he's talking about, and Klay Thompson has never given any coach that he's played for that we're aware of any inkling of this sort of trouble. Klay Thompson is present. Klay Thompson is a respected member of his teams. He's a respected member of the the NBA Association, that brotherhood, and I don't know that that ja is. And so for for JA to call this well respected, and like you said, Truly a top 75 player. But certainly, you know top 76 top 77 for him to call him a bum when he's got four championships in his back pocket. And just as you alluded to, he contributed mightily to each of them, whether Kevin Durant at Jeff curry were there or not. Klay Thompson can play basketball. Sure he's a little long in the tooth now he's getting older, and that happens. That's just Father Time. No one outruns Father Time.

Graydon Prescott 6:42
There's three guys in the league that

K.B. 6:45
seem like they are doing, yeah, yes. But ultimately, you know, old man, Father Time win. One of them is about to be 41 right, right, and the other two are 37 that's another matter for another day. Shout out to LeBron, James Steph Curry, all these guys that are doing Hey. Kevin Durant, all these guys that are doing it over 35 Yeah,

Graydon Prescott 7:03
but that's, that's, those are anomalies. Correct, correct. And look, Clay still. Clay is by no means a bum as John Moran.

K.B. 7:12
Clay is still, he's not what he was six years ago.

Graydon Prescott 7:15
Still a very respectable NBA player. He's a great shooter. He's still shooting 40% and

K.B. 7:20
he's a good dude, yeah, and he doesn't deserve that kind of respect from a guy who was achieving absolutely nothing. And he's in the NBA,

Graydon Prescott 7:28
and Klay Thompson never has gone out and caused problems the most attention Klay Thompson's ever gotten in the media outside of basketball, where I think I can think of two, maybe three things. One of them, it even is kind of basketball. When he tried to do a

K.B. 7:41
360 dunk in China, in China? Oh yeah, yes. And then the other one is

Graydon Prescott 7:46
him and Megan thee stallion, doing their thing. Yes, nobody, like, nobody's mad about that. Nobody's that's not a controversy. That's, oh, my god. CLAY Thomas

K.B. 7:55
and his daddy shout out to Michael Thompson, la Laker, his daddy has never gotten into an altercation sitting on the sideline or sitting on at court side. You know the way John Morant, so you wonder what? You know, the Apple does not fall far from the tree. We hear that a lot, and in this case, it is absolutely true. So if I were John Morant and I thank goodness I'm not, I would keep my mouth shut, because you are nowhere near the player that Klay Thompson is. And based on the way your career is going, you never will, you never will be right, absolutely

Graydon Prescott 8:29
right. And it's very rare that somebody is, but we can when John Morant got into the league in his first couple of seasons, the way he was playing, he looked like he could be on that level soon enough, and and the last four years of his career have just been a disappointment after disappointments. I don't know why he still runs his mouth, because he's been one of the more disappointing players over the last few years, because when he got into the league, he came in swinging right now and now, and he's 20. What's fun to watch? Yeah, and now at 26 years old, dude is. He looks like he's past his

K.B. 9:02
prime. But the reason he was fun to watch is because, you know what did all the talking when he first got into the league, that game, his play, thank you, his game. Now he's running his mouth. Now that the game is not where the mouth is, and he, like you said, he wasn't even in this game. This was an altercation that happened on the floor because one of the Dallas Maverick players, Cooper flag was tripped by one of the Memphis grizzly players, and so clay Thompson stepped in. Hey, that's unnecessary. Blah, blah, blah. And so it kind of got out of hand after that. And then after the game, as ja is walking out, as clay is walking out, he calls him a bomb, like you're in street clothes, yeah. Like, I just do not understand the mindset, but that is why you have one foot in and one foot out of Memphis, and it's not by choice. And I don't know that there's going to be a big market for him, because now you're going to he's toxic in a locker room. You know, the one thing that I can say about another guy who's had is missed his fair share of games, and everybody thought he was going to be that franchise player. Is, is Williamson and or Williams Right? Was I on Williams? I am Williamson and, but he's a good dude. Yeah, right. You don't hear about any trouble that he has off the court, any situations that he's getting. He's a big guy, so it's hard for him to stay healthy just his weight. Yes, yes, but he's a good dude. John Moran, I think, is leaving the taste in everyone's mouth that he's just not a decent guy, and I would not be surprised if his career ends up shorter than he might think, ends up being shorter than he might think.

Graydon Prescott 10:30
Yeah, absolutely, it's great. And Prescott here on Sports prep live, and we got some controversy to talk about in sports world. And then after that, we're going to talk about three UNLV sports teams and how their seasons are going so far now, the next piece of controversy that we have, and kind of the last one, is Michael Porter Jr, and yeah, and the stuff he said about WNBA players taking us with this relative to the NBA player. So he was asked about a sentiment that Patrick Beverley, a statement that Patrick Beverley made where he said that some NBA benches lose to the wn like the WNBA themes, sure. Now is he, is that statement Correct? No, not really, but he's giving respect to the women's players, and he, you know, I don't know if it's a slight at the men's players who are coming off the bench, or if it's respect to the women's players. Could be read either way. Yeah, yes, I'm gonna, I'm gonna try to see the good side. So I think he's just trying to be respectful of the women's players. Sure, is why not. And then they asked Michael Porter Jr on his podcast, what did he think? And he basically said that NBA players that by the time that they got to the eighth grade were beating the WNBA players right now, right to pick up their powers, right? Is he wrong? No. Is the statement necessary? Absolutely not. What a would a player who is worth their salt in the NBA say something like that. Absolutely not. Kevin Durant, absolutely Steph Curry, no. So, I mean, Sophie Cunningham kind of commented on it, and she, she tried to play it off, but she did say, like, Duh, Captain Obvious, yeah, come on, tell me something I don't know Correct. I mean, it's just an unnecessary comment, and I don't know why. Like Michael Porter, he's a good NBA player. He averages 20 something points, right? He's a good player, right? But there's no reason for that. And the top players, and Angel McCarty pointed this out, a former WNBA player, she's like Kobe Bryant would have never said

K.B. 12:36
anything. No, he would not. Yeah, Kobe, no, he would not. Kevin Durant would have never said this. LeBron James would have never said this. Steph Curry would have never said this. And we can go on and on and on. It is sexist. It is misogynistic. I do not understand. And it is obvious, yes, it is a given that eighth grade young men who are on their way and we're not talking about average eighth graders here, ladies and gentlemen, or average ninth graders. These are guys that are 6263, in the eighth grade on their way to being 666768696, 10, identified early on as NBA prospects like you have to really be about it to be in eighth grade and be identified as an NBA prospect, but it happens, and these are the people that he's talking about beating a WNBA team. And it's, it's one of those moments like, yeah, so what? Yes, probably, probably 99 out of 100 times, if not 100 times out of 100 times. But I will say this, if we're talking gray matter, if we're talking basketball, IQ, if we're talking skill set, I will put a Chelsea gray a Caitlin Clark, a page Beckers and IQ and skill set up against darn near anybody in the NBA. And I'll also say this relative to their peers. Michael Porter Jr is nowhere near an Asia Wilson, relative to their peers. Michael Porter Jr is nowhere near Chelsea gray. He's nowhere near and she hasn't even done anything in this league yet. Really, he's nowhere near a Paige Becker's I don't remember Michael Porter Jr being the consensus wooden award winner in college.

Graydon Prescott 14:24
Well, he Michael border Jr, did have, like, a catastrophic back injury that almost left him Herald, okay,

K.B. 14:31
okay, but, but that's not what we're talking about, right? That, and he should have won.

Graydon Prescott 14:36
He was, like, coming out of high school, going to Missouri because it happened over the training camp at Missouri. But he

K.B. 14:44
was that dude. Say no more. Say no more. I don't know that that dude has been to Missouri, like, let's keep it a buck.

Graydon Prescott 14:51
No. He had offers from every everywhere he chose to go to Missouri for the same reason that Caitlin chose to go to Iowa. She could have gone anywhere she wanted

K.B. 14:59
to. Caitlin could have. On anywhere she wanted to. But I do not believe if we compare resumes in high school, and this is what I'm talking about, relative to their

Graydon Prescott 15:08
peers in high school, Michael Porter Jr was like 38 points a game, number one team in the country, okay,

K.B. 15:15
but 40 in one record. I need to see the accolades, because when you're getting wooden Awards and the Honda awards and all of that. I'm sure he got Gatorade player of the year. That's a state thing. But when you're talking wooden awards, now we're talking about relative to all your peers in the country. And I don't know we're big Caitlin Clark fans here. I don't know if Caitlin would have done what she did in Iowa at UConn. I don't know. I don't think the system would allow that. So I don't know that Michael Porter Jr would have been Michael Porter Jr at Duke, at Kentucky

Graydon Prescott 15:49
in high school, he averaged, I just he averaged 36 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals, three blocks. He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. MVP up the McDonald's all American game, and his team went 29 and no and won the

K.B. 16:01
national championship. Okay? And did he win a national championship in college? He played one year in college. Okay? So the answer is no, no, right? Okay, and this is what I'm talking about. Like, I'm not saying he's not a good player. He is a good player, but relative to your peers, you are not Asia Wilson, you don't have the championships. You don't have the MBP, I don't

Graydon Prescott 16:21
think a national championship in college. Now, I'm not Michael barter Jr is anywhere near Asia, Wilson or or Caitlin or Paige at the W and me, I'm

K.B. 16:31
just saying, I'm just talking about historical achievement relative to your peers. He hasn't

Graydon Prescott 16:38
done at the pro level, or college or pro

K.B. 16:40
level. Well, even if you throw in the accolades that he received in when he was in high school and college, it's still relative to like these women that we're talking about are outside the frame. They're otherworldly, these accomplishments. You know, the only thing that Caitlin Clark hasn't done is won a national championship on the collegiate level. But Asia Wilson, since he's in the pro let's talk about that, right? He's nowhere near in Asia. Well, yeah, he's nowhere

Graydon Prescott 17:04
even that's also a tell me something I don't know,

K.B. 17:06
correct, correct? Now, when you're comparing gray matter, when you're comparing a basketball IQ, where we can pit women visa versus women versus men, and I don't mean in opposition. I mean we can compare them both, right? When we compare gray matter, not physical attributes. Yes, men are stronger. Men can jump higher. Men can run faster. Tell me something I don't know, well, when we talk about the stuff that that really matters, that sets you apart, which is, how do you do relative to your peers? But

Graydon Prescott 17:35
also, like, I don't want to, I don't want to throw Asia Wilson's name around there too much, because relative to her peers and NBA players relative to their peers, Asia Wilson isn't on like a regular, and she's otherworldly. It's, it's between the WNBA and the NBA players that I can think of. It's Asia Wilson, it's LeBron, it's Michael Jordan, it's, it's Steph Curry.

K.B. 18:01
I think that is, I think that is a fair point, yeah. But I can also continue to go down Yeah, is still not there, yeah. I can say to meet you catching. I can say Maya Moore. I can say Thompson. I can say swoops, like he's nowhere near these women and so to knock them in this sexist, misogynistic way that he did, I think, speaks more about who he is as a basketball player and a man than it says about, you know, what he the point he's trying to make about these women?

Graydon Prescott 18:30
Yeah, absolutely. All right, great, impressed guy here on Sports prep live. And the last thing we have to do for today is talk about UNLV. Yeah, three different sports teams, three different records, three different programs, three different head coaches that I have interviewed, all of them, right? I'm collecting Infinity Stones. I feel like, yes, yes.

K.B. 18:50
So that's a color of

Graydon Prescott 18:53
referencefinity stones. So UNLV football, look doing the darn thing. Nine and two and coach Mullen, they played against Hawaii, who was seven and three coming into the game, UNLV was eight and two, and Hawaii looked like a threat. In fact, the spread was only two and a half, two and a half points, and it was only because UNLV was at home. So I was at that game, and you were there as well. Yes, and I openly admit I thought Hawaii was going to give them a run for their money, dude, and I thought Hawaii would win the game, because I've seen their defense, and their defense has been great this year. Their offense has been really good this year, they got a quarterback who's been lights out for most of the season, and I couldn't have been more wrong. UNLV hit a field goal on their first drive. Hawaii got a touchdown. Went up seven three. And I think in three plays they like a 74 yard passing touchdown, right? And after Hawaii went up seven, three. UNLV outscored these dudes. 35 Yeah, yeah, you can close the curtains. After that, UNLV out scored these guys. 35 three. After the first

K.B. 19:56
touchdown, I've Wow,

Graydon Prescott 19:58
it was, it looked like. UNLV was playing against a JV high school team like it was that dominant.

K.B. 20:06
And I don't think it was because the Hawaii team, what are they, though, warriors, the rainbow wars. Rainbow warriors. I do not think it was because they played a necessarily bad game.

Graydon Prescott 20:18
UNLV like a national champion.

K.B. 20:21
UNLV was dominant. Yeah, they played every aspect of the game. When we say

Graydon Prescott 20:28
they got an interception, they had multiple sacks. Anthony Colin Drea was 21 for 26 three touchdowns, 203 yards scrambling, first downs. They had three receivers with, touchdowns or three touch, three passing touchdowns, three different receivers. Colin Dre had a rushing touchdown. We had a rushing touchdown from Kayvon Lee, who had 14 yarders. Had a 14 yarder in the second quarter. Had 63 all purpose yards. You know, there was a 72 yard passing touchdown. Dude had 51 Jaden Bradley had 51 yards and five catches, and they had a touchdown on direct snap to to a guy by the name of of JoJo man. What's his last name? Earl. Jojo Earl, Earl, yeah, yeah. Jojo Earl, direct snap to him for a touchdown. Like everything was working for the Rebels. And, you know, Hawaii hadn't had a game where they threw under 200 yards all season, right? And this was the first

K.B. 21:27
time, yeah, and I say it, this was not a knock on Micah, who played at Bishop

Graydon Prescott 21:31
Gorman, yeah, no, Hawaii's a good team. It's a

K.B. 21:35
good football team. It is UNLV show coach Mullen has these dudes hitting on all cylinders. Absolutely. It was a master class. Yeah, it was one shout out to the rebels, nine and two now as they head this weekend into

Graydon Prescott 21:51
Reno or their for their 10th victory of the year,

K.B. 21:55
this should again, you just never know. So they got to stay on point,

Graydon Prescott 21:59
yeah, but it seems, hey, this is a UNLV show. I get to, I get to prop up.

K.B. 22:04
Yeah, they, it seems like they have hit their stride. Yeah, it's gonna be hard to knock them off.

Graydon Prescott 22:08
Now, Reno is cold, so there is that, yeah, but I will say I don't know if this was a tactical move, or if it was just Allegiant stadium. It was cold in there. Why? And I don't know if Hawaii is used, yeah,

K.B. 22:22
it got me thinking about that old red are box, yeah, those moves where he would turn up the air.

Graydon Prescott 22:29
Yeah, that was, it was onion. Had me thinking

K.B. 22:32
about that, that, yeah, that might have affected some of these guys. Used to that warm sun out in Hawaii, but yes, it was unusually cold. I'm not, I'm not. There's no conspiracy theories. Yeah, yeah, but it was chilly in there. I wonder if that impacted play. That was funny.

Graydon Prescott 22:47
Yeah, that was, that was a good one. Next UNLV is men's basketball. The Running Rebels, they won two. They've won two in a row now. They beat St Joseph's on Thursday night back at home at Thomas and Mack Center. 666. Rebels scored in double figures. Fourth straight game that they scored over 90 points. Mind you, this is a team that just last year averaged 69 points a game, right? This is four times in a row they've scored over 90 draw Gibbs law horn 20 points. It was the second game with 20 or more this season. And you know, a true freshman named Tyron Jones added 1610, and six blocks. He's bowler and Jacob Barnaby. You know, he had 12 points and 11 remounts, both career highs and UNLV. Look, the rebels are running, and they're looking good after that win against Memphis. I think it gave him a jolt, yes, and now they're playing some very good basketball. They gave up 85 points, which you don't necessarily right, see, right, right, but if you're going to score 99 that's okay, that's a double digit win, right, right? It was kind of a wire to wire victory. I mean, it was a relatively close game for the most part, but I don't think UNLV really trailed. They were in the lead most of the time. It was a good game. And next up, they're headed to players era at MGM Grand Garden Arena. I think that's tonight, right? That's tonight, yes, or they're gonna play Maryland. That's at nine o'clock. So you got time while this show is airing? Actually, Alabama is playing Gonzaga. That's a number 11 versus number 13 game. So after you get off, get done listening to this. And then tomorrow, the 25th Gonzaga will be playing against Maryland and UNLV. This is the big one, Alabama at number 11. And then the final game will be determined by the outcome of the first the outcomes of the first two games. It's kind of this round robin style thing. So if Gonzaga wins two and Alabama wins whatever, two teams will face each other for the championship the players era, and that game will be on Wednesday. So UNLV is in that tournament. They've been playing well recently. So let's, let's see what they can do. Yeah, absolutely. So they get they kick off tonight, or tip off tonight. My football. Old tip off tonight against Maryland, nine o'clock Pacific time. Yes. Finally, what I did not expect to be saying is that the lady rebels have lost three games in a row, right there, two and three, and they've been right there. Yeah, I know for all, one of them, this is a good squad, one of them we talked about last week with Baylor, right? And then they played against Montana State last Tuesday, and they committed 24 turnovers. And that, you know, they had four players in double figures, but they lost the paint battle, 40 to 30. And 24 turnovers is the game hard. 24 to 12 most impossible. You know, they were better rebounding. They shot a higher percentage, but 24 turnovers killed it. That's possessions. Alia Alexander had 18. Mariah Elohim had 15. And then Jasmine Lott, who we talked a lot about last year, and metal rolling, each had 13. So no real scoring explosions, but good balance, yeah, but they came up short against a Montana State team who they probably should have beaten, right? And then on Saturday, they had a heartbreaker where they exchanged the lead six times, and there were six ties in a knock down, drag out. Was like a championship box brawlers, and, you know, they were down by three heading into the fourth quarter, cut the lead to one, and then they took the lead, or tied it at 50 a piece with, you know, metal rolling. And then they took the lead for a second there, and they were tied at 53 for about two minutes at the end of the game. And in one of the most ridiculous lucky shots I have ever Yeah, ever seen? Yes, Arizona State was about to turn the ball over. The shot clock was at one, and a girl basically threw it over her head, Hail Mary, and just banked it in with 14 seconds left and UNLV, or four seconds left, and UNLV couldn't score to tie it, so they lost 56 to 53 for their third loss in a row, which, to me, is surprising, because this is a team that, obviously, over the last few seasons has been very, very good. So it's like a season worth of losses for them. So we, you know, we obviously have high expectations for this team, so to see them at two and three right now, granted, two of those three losses could have gone either way, right, right? You know, 24 turnovers against Montana State is unacceptable, but they almost beat Baylor. And if Jasmine Lott hadn't gone down for a second, I think they would have number seven team in the country right at the time. And then they lost on, you know, pick a number one to 100 and they got it right. That's essentially the same odds of that shot going in, right? And maybe worse. So, you know, they they lost on a Hail Mary. It is what it is. So they're two and three. The record is kind of deceiving, because I still think this is a good, a great, this is a good basketball team. I've seen him in action, yeah. So they're gonna be all right. But, you know, three losses in a row, obviously isn't what you want to see. But don't worry, the lady rebels are going to be fine.

K.B. 28:04
I'm sure Coach Lorac is going to be in their rear ends. About the turnovers. You've got to take care of the ball. I think the other aspects of the game, they're going to be just fine. They'll get their Debs, but you cannot turn the ball over 24 times against anybody, even a subpar team, and expect to come out on top it just it doesn't happen

a lot. Yeah, absolutely. And next up for the lady rebels, again, not a fan of that name, but it is what, yes. Next up for the lady rebels, they are hosting the Las Vegas UNLV Thanksgiving turkey tip off starting on Wednesday, November 26 they're going to play against Creighton at noon on Wednesday at the Thomas and Mack Center, and on Friday, we will see it's to be determined, depends on the winner of the other side, correct? But, you know, we'll see what happens, I think. And Creighton's a good team. They always have been in the women's yes, they're perennially in the NCAA Tournament.
