Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live, sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellence in athletics.
Graydon Prescott 0:35
What's up everybody? Welcome back to another episode of sports prep live. I'm your host, Graydon Prescott, and today we have a fun, exciting, but also a little bit upsetting day in the sports world. So we got KB here today, yes, and we'll just jump right in. So college football had a very dramatic and eventful week, big weekend we'll start with right here at UNLV. All good things, unfortunately come to an end, is the saying it is and UNLV, you know what? Or it could be all good things have a hiatus. I guess you could say every good drama has its subplot, whatever you know, there's many ways to say it the six and oh rebels. First time in 51 years, were six and o undefeated this deep into the season, they have fortunately, unfortunately, suffered their first loss of the season, Boise State and in an away game, of course, yes, it was away, but it wasn't particularly close, either. They lost by 25 at least not in the second half. They allowed 56 points, and they just, it just wasn't a good game. Now it was a four point game at halftime, so it looked like it was anybody's football game, 2428 at half, and then third quarter happens. And five minutes left in the game. It's 56 to 24 the game is over, right? Boise State scored the first 28 points of the second half, and there was nothing that they could do. Madsen through 253 he was 14 for 23 the Broncos. Boise State is the Broncos, right? They had basically 300 rushing yards and 600 yards of total offense. UNLV offense, albeit not their best game of the season. The offense wasn't horrible either. Sure, they put up 31 points. That's not a bad showing. Second half could have been better, but I
K.B. 2:17
think this was, I think this was a defensive issue.
Graydon Prescott 2:21
Well, you give up 56 points. It's it's always now,
K.B. 2:24
again, some context, as you mentioned, it was 2428 at the half. Boise, state was up four at the half. That's right. So that's quarter one and two. In quarter three, they basically played to a draw. So quarter four, or I'm sorry, yes, in quarter four, they basically played to a draw. So quarters one, two and four were okay for the
Graydon Prescott 2:44
Rebels, yeah, UNLV between quarters one, two and four lost the football game 31 to 35 right? So it wasn't one, three and three out of the four quarters, which is really weird to say about a team that lost a game by 25 Yes, but 75% of the game. It was neck and neck, right? But you get out scored, 21 nothing in third, and
K.B. 3:04
I think Coach Mullen is is going to have the issue with respect to the defense, because that should not have happened. That shouldn't happen period, yeah, for a team to pop off that number of, what was it? 28 unanswered points. You know, in a quarter, that's 28 points is a lot for a game, yeah, but for a quarter, it's just unconscionable. And so I think the issue there for Dan Mullen, whom I know you've spoken with, he's a good coach, great background. This man knows what he's doing, and I'm not really worried about this. In terms of the rebel football team, I think there's always going to be, no matter what sport, there's always going to be some glitches. They are six and one that is still super strong, no, absolutely for an FBS football program. So I'm not really worried about it. I think we will learn a lot about how they respond to a loss like this in their next game, which I believe is a home game, and so I'm not really worried about it. Obviously, it's something that you would rather not have happened. But they have, they have, at least for me, they have bought themselves some time. They have bought my patience by how well they've played in these first and those first six games. And again, I'm a huge fan of coach Dan Mullen. He knows what the heck he's doing, so I imagine he's going to get with that defensive team and he's going
Graydon Prescott 4:25
to fix some things. Yeah, absolutely. Next game is at home. Like you said, it is the ninth ranked in the Mountain West. So UNLV is now fourth in the standings. Sure, New Mexico is number nine. They have an overall record of four and three. They're one and two in conference play. That is a game that UNLV probably should win, sure, especially being a home game and a bounce back opportunity, and it's a good bounce back opportunity for them, so I do think they will capitalize and look, this isn't an issue of coaching, like we had to highlight at Penn State right a few weeks ago. Dan Mullen. Knows what he's doing. Dan Mullen is a great coach. Guest of the show. If you haven't heard that interview, it's a great interview. But look, the coaching staff, they know what they're doing. This is a good football team, regardless of a one bad outcome, one bad game, doesn't shape how a team performs for the rest of the season.
K.B. 5:16
And you can say, you know if, if we're going to have, if we're going to lay an egg like this. I would
Graydon Prescott 5:21
rather do it mid season, right? Yeah. Do it weeks. Do it week seven, absolutely. Then toward the end of the season, you're already bowl eligible. Yes. Now, the only bad thing about this loss is UNLV was in a position to make a push to be a ranked team, right? And Boise State has been a ranked team over the past couple of years. They're not right now, correct, but they started the season right, suffered two losses that they shouldn't have suffered. But Boise State is a top 30 football program perennially. Sure 25 are ranked Boise State's going to be if they're not in the top 25 they'll be between 26 and 30. So it would have been a good victory, very good. Yes, on the road, I agree with that. It would have been a good victory, but, but that's okay. They're gonna wait for No, it's okay. Still six and one already bowl eligible. And look, when you give up, I'll just name the starters here. When you give up 253 yards in the air and 201 yards on the ground, it's gonna be really, yeah, 454 yards of offense, and that doesn't account for the backup running backs and the backup quarterback. You know, when you give up a total of 558, that's not it's difficult recipe for that's a recipe for disaster, yes, and it's insane to think that UNLV was right there, except for one one quarter, horrific quarter. Yeah, but the biggest takeaways for them have just got to be playing four great quarters of football, their offense has to be great for four quarters. They can't, you know, take a quarter off defense
K.B. 6:46
again. I don't think, I don't think this was an offensive issue.
Graydon Prescott 6:50
No, no, absolutely not. I'm not blaming the office. I'm not pointing blaming anybody. Yeah, we're not blaming anybody, but, but clearly, collectively, happened in a quarter, right? You can't. It's a defensive issue, yes, but it's also like, you can't score zero points in a quarter. You know, you got to look at the offense. That happens in football. It does happen football. If the defense is going to give up three touchdowns in one right? The offense needs to respond. So look, you can't blame the offense for the defense giving up three touchdowns, but at the same time, okay, the offense was very, very effective for the first two quarters, right? Yeah, you put up 24 points in the first half. You're on pace to score 48 Boise State scored 28
K.B. 7:27
so Boise State made an adjustment at halftime, absolutely. And I don't know that we made the right adjustment on halftime, and I'm sure Dan Mullen is going to sit down with his defensive coordinator and get these wrinkles ironed out. And I expect a different effort. I expect a different outcome, even in this next game that they have on Game Number eight, I believe
Graydon Prescott 7:47
November 1 back at home. They have a bye week, and then they're at home in two weeks. They're fourth in the Mountain West but they have a few games that they should probably capitalize sure and expect to see the rebels in the Mountain West championship, most likely playing in a in a rematch against Boise State. That
K.B. 8:06
would be good. Yeah, that would be good. And I would expect, again, I'm not guaranteeing, a win, but I would expect a different outcome in terms of the level of performance that they see in all four quarters, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and possibly, or probably, on the offensive side of the ball, absolutely. But this was a defensive miscue. Yeah.
Graydon Prescott 8:22
Now, while we we run a UNLV program here. This is a un This is UNLV, of course, yes, but that was far from the most disappointing performance in college football this past weekend. Let's just rip. Let's just cut to the chase. Rip a band aid off. Carson Beck was the most disappointing in college football this
K.B. 8:42
week. Miami. Count them, 1234,
Graydon Prescott 8:46
Uno dos, tres cuatro. Miami was the number two team in the country coming in one game coming into this week, they looked like the number two team in the country the whole year. Yes, they have been clearly head and shoulders above their opponents. They hadn't played against an Ohio State or anything like, right, right? They're an ACC team. They're not an SEC or a big 10. And I think the difficulty with having an ACC team rank so high is you get them against a team that's not from the ACC, who might be one of those big hitters from the top two conference. Sure, then it's an issue. But that doesn't even come into the equation when the ACC team that's ranked number two in the country loses to an unranked team with a losing record.
K.B. 9:26
It was tough. Yeah, it was tough. And I think the rebels can say, at least we are not right, right? That was in a tough and embarrassing loss. It was in Miami. Miami was ranked number
Graydon Prescott 9:38
two, number two nation. It was a monstrosity. This is a team that they should have buried. Yes, absolutely, University of Louisville. Yeah, Cardinals. And look, no disrespect to Louisville whatsoever. This is, you know, it's a good but there are levels too. Yes, a good sports school. Miami is the number two football program in nation. There are levels to, like you said, Yes. Now the they were number two in the country, probably because. Of their schedule. Are they a better football team than Indiana this year? Probably not. I don't think so. Are they a better football team than even Oregon? Probably not. I don't think so. Of course not. Ohio State, absolutely not. Probably not a better team than Georgia or Alabama. But look, you're number two in the country. You got, you got something to play for here. You can't just approach a game like it's any other game when you're number two in the country, and a lot of people, myself included, may have been questioning whether you deserve to be number two, right? Because of the difficulty of their schedule, they got a great win to start the season, a great win since then, it's kind of been coasting. And when a team that's in your conference comes in and they're like, Okay, you're the number two team in the country, but you know, who have you really played? Right? It's a different mindset than it is if you walk into Ohio State's building and you see Dave beaten Michigan, yes,
K.B. 10:50
hence, this is something that you are for for a month, right? A month out, you are scheming the offense in the defense of the opposing team, absolutely. Here, I don't know that you're preparing for the University of Louisville a month out, right? And that may have been the problem. And to add to that, I think now with transfers and n i L, it is, it is more difficult for team to kind of see around the corner in terms of what they're going to be facing, because now a program that may have been more abound in the past, a program that may have been lackluster in the past. They may be one or two five star athletes away from upsetting a number two team, right? And so you can't necessarily say, Okay, well, traditionally, University of Louisville is a great basketball team. They're an oh, they're great baseball team, they're an okay football
Graydon Prescott 11:38
program, yeah, look, Louisville is five and one. So let's not get it twisted. Their football team this year has been good. They beat a tough Pittsburgh team. They lost by three to a ranked Virginia team. Virginia's number 16 in the country. That game went to overtime, and Louisville has buried everybody that they played that's not ranked. So this is no pushover, right? Louisville is no
K.B. 11:59
pushover, and that's what I'm saying. I mean, historically, that hasn't been the University of Louisville on the football side, yeah, in the sport of football. But now, because of n i L, because of the transform portal, you just don't know. And so you really have to do your homework. You really have to prepare, because something like this can and will continue to happen, because there's so much talent out there. And you they're not simply going to or there's not a monopoly with the Alabama's and the Georgia's and the Penn States and the trouble that they're going through Ohio State, those programs used to and Miami, those programs used to have a monopoly on those top five star players. Not anymore.
Graydon Prescott 12:36
Right now, the good news for Miami is they're going to have, they have no more ranked games for the rest of the year. It's just ACC opponents. But the bad news for them is next week is going to be their easiest one, which is Stanford. Then after that, they have to play a very, very tough SMU team, not ranked, sure, not ranked, but they're similar to Louisville. Yeah, they're undefeated in conference play, right? SMU has has some good wins. They can power number three in the ACC. So, and look, the ACC has been a very, very good conference. This year. You got teams that are five and one, you got teams that are six and one. Georgia Tech is the number seven team in the country. Miami is now number nine, but they were two. This is a, it's a, it's probably clearly the third best conference, okay, in football right now, you could say the big 12, maybe, but Miami, look, it's a tough loss. I think they will bounce back, but they need to be careful, because this is one of those games that it kind of opens your eyes to the state of college football right now. Not
K.B. 13:37
only is it a tough where it could be damaging, yeah, it could be damaging in terms
Graydon Prescott 13:40
of and you can and it's not one of those losses where you could say, Oh, everybody contributed to the you point the finger at one guy to this time, Carson Beck, yeah, so he has to respond, Yes. And four interceptions. That's what we were talking this is a multi two, three. This is a multi million dollar quarterback. He was a quarterback at Georgia behind Stenson Bennett, and he had a great year last year at Georgia as QB one, and he's making millions of dollars playing for Miami, and that's the performance you turn out that was subpar. He needs to respond to say the least. That was Carson Beck had a horrible outing. Yeah, absolutely. He needs to fix that. And fast he does. Texas Tech, they suffered their first loss of the season to Arizona State. Okay, moving on.
K.B. 14:21
Why are we moving on from that Texas, you know, it's a notable program, but you know, it's all right.
Graydon Prescott 14:26
Texas Tech was a top five ranked team, okay, okay, and they lost,
K.B. 14:30
and then, and that's what I mean. That's why I said okay, because I feel like sometimes there are teams that are they have phantom placement in that that do
Graydon Prescott 14:39
you think? Do you think Miami had phantom placement. I actually
K.B. 14:42
do not really. I don't think Miami had phantom placement, but I do think Miami took its eye off the ball. I do think Miami took some things for granted that they probably won't do anymore, unlike, say, UNLV. I don't think UNLV went into Boise, state and took anything for granted. I just think they didn't make the adjustment. They needed to do for the struggle that that was in that first half, right? Yeah, the Boise State made the adjustment. UNLV did that is fixable. That's not a train wreck, even though the point differential is something we not we'd like not to see. I know Dan Mullen is going to fix that, but if you have a top five rating or a top two, which I do think was deserved by Miami. You cannot let your eye off the ball, right? And I think that's what a team like an Ohio State does. They prepare for everybody, yeah, everybody. You don't slip by under the radar on Ohio State, and it
Graydon Prescott 15:33
shows Yeah. And I will admit to this, I thought for a few weeks that Indiana had a phantom ranking, even though they were undefeated, you better ask somebody. And then they walked into Eugene, OR wasn't for real, yeah. And then they walked into Eugene, Oregon, and kind of dominated, sure, sure, a couple weeks back. So, yeah, look, Oregon, Indiana is for real. They are Indiana's for real. This, this team is serious, Ohio State, I think his head and shoulders, the best team, sure, big 10. But look
K.B. 16:04
Indiana. Indiana's moving. Yes, they are. They are moving in the right direction. They're number two in the nation, and I don't think anyone going forward will take this team for granted. These boys are serious,
Graydon Prescott 16:14
and they had a they were in a similar spot last year undefeated through a few games. But this year is different. They beat an Oregon team that looked sort of invincible, sure, sure, after the way they played Penn State and, you know, the way they've handled this season, especially after last year, going 13 and oh, and then losing to an Ohio State team that was, I mean, clearly the best team in the nation. But Oregon looked great, and they played Indiana and they looked lost. Yes, so Indiana's for
K.B. 16:42
real. They are absolutely tough program, another big 10 team. Keep an eye out for Indiana. Yeah, they're going somewhere.
Graydon Prescott 16:49
And while we're on the topic of football, we don't really talk about the NFL a lot on this show, because there are about a million sports shows that the NFL what else is new? Raiders lost. What else is new? You know what's notable though, the New York Giants lost, and that's not notable until you see how they lost. Yes, the New York Giants are, let's call it like it is. They've been a poverty franchise in the NFL for quite some time now, since the days of Odell Beckham, yeah, exactly. Look, they were up 19 to zero through three quarters against the Denver Broncos, and proceeded to allow 33 points, unbelievable in the fourth quarter on no overtime, just, just 33
K.B. 17:27
straight game clock. Yes, it is all over sports news. No one can believe it. This just does not happen. In fact, it hasn't happened since 2010 and it hasn't happened in the last count this, or get this, 3700 games in the NFL. Yeah, you have to go back 3700 games before you get to a team that had a 19 point lead in the fourth quarter and ended up losing the game. That is atrocious. That should not happen at the NFL level. And look, Jackson dart can play this dude is a great quarterback. I'm not seeing that all of this falls on his shoulders, but that is unconscionable. And we may be in on the professional level. We may be dealing with what you and LV had to deal with a little bit defense, like, how do you give up 33 points in one quarter when you go into that quarter with a 19 point lead? Yeah, I don't know if that will happen again in our lifetimes, like that. Probably it was that bad, and they've got some things to fix. Like you said, poverty franchise, they've got some things to fix over there in New York. Now, this was an
Graydon Prescott 18:31
embarrassment. Yeah, now I will say as much as the Giants have been very horrible this year. Their rookie quarterback, Jackson Dart has
K.B. 18:38
been fantastic. He is phenomenal. This dude can play football. Yeah,
Graydon Prescott 18:42
absolutely. He was the quarterback at Ole Miss. Yes, dude is great. He knows what he's doing. And the giant, I think the Giants starting him over Russell Wilson was the right decision they've made. It probably should have happened from day one. Yeah, it was the best decision they've made. But look, we don't really have much to say about the NFL, but I think that just, you can't be a sports show on October. What's today? The 20th. October 20, 2025
K.B. 19:09
and not mentioned. And you said, you know, what else is new? I mean, they're a hometown team. Come on, like Raiders. We got to get it together. Like, like Kansas City Chiefs. I know it's an away game, but I think the last time, okay, I saw the score. It was 31
Graydon Prescott 19:21
to Yeah, that was the final score. Look the chief. Come on, yeah. But the Chiefs don't count. The Chiefs don't count. The Chiefs are on another level.
K.B. 19:30
They are but 31 to 00,
Graydon Prescott 19:33
yeah, no, I know zero. Geno Smith is our quarterback.
K.B. 19:37
I don't have a lot to say. They're a hometown team, you know, and I respect the heck out of guys. This is an issue of Mark Davis. I respect the heck out of their president, Sarah Douglas, like, like, this is tough. I just don't understand because also going on, what's in the water over there in Henderson at this practice facility, I really don't get it. Yeah, it's been, they've had a rough. A little bit, absolutely, Carol has got his work cut out for him. He's not keeping a job. He may not. He's not keeping he may not, like this is, you know, and it's that's not fair a lot of times, but the onus does fall business, right? And so what Penn State, you know, on the college level, is finding out, well, maybe Franklin wasn't the problem, right? And you know, somebody that we really respect on this program. Coach Saban said that he thought the firing was egregious and should have never happened. And we weighed in on that a little bit last, last, last week and last,
Graydon Prescott 20:30
I think, look, we said that a coach needs to be held accountable,
K.B. 20:34
but firing a coach is not a panacea that's not going to
Graydon Prescott 20:37
solve all right, especially mid season. Yes, so, so So I don't think Pete Carroll is gonna be out of a job this season, or even next season, um, and, but the clock is ticking. But I would agree much more if he was than I do with the James Franklin situation, absolutely. Um, okay, let's, let's, let's move on from the NFL. Yes, and I want to talk a little bit about the WNBA now. The season just ended as you guys know, the aces are champions again, third in the last four years. And while we're celebrating, let's not forget that a very, very busy off season is set to begin. And you
K.B. 21:12
say busy, I say scary. It's gonna be for a lot of teams. This is gonna be scary. It's gonna be fascinating to watch from where we sit. It's absolutely
Graydon Prescott 21:21
fascinating. So here's a few things. I think Chicago Sky are gonna completely fall apart. Vandersloot missed the whole year.
K.B. 21:28
Chicago Sky completely fell apart months ago, but I get where you're going. Yeah,
Graydon Prescott 21:33
yeah. Courtney vandersloot tore her ACL her career's probably done. Angel Reese and ARIEL ATKINS both missed a lot of time, and Atkins, who knows if she's coming back, and Reese has, of course, been pushing for a trade. So look,
K.B. 21:48
Chicago, she was in a Victoria Secret show or something. I didn't even know she was still doing baseball or basketball partner. I
Graydon Prescott 21:55
mean, shoot, I don't know what she's up to these days. Yeah, whatever it is, it's not helping. It's not basketball. The Dallas wings already fired their coach, and
K.B. 22:03
there also should have happened a long time ago, but they are doing the right thing now, and hopefully, you know, again, no, I'm just, you got to hold somebody accountable. And I think his sister was on his staff. And I'm not a big fan of nepotism ever, but particularly in the coaching realm. Yeah, what are we doing? Yeah. But yes, he's out, and I'm sure his sister is out with
Graydon Prescott 22:25
him. Now, here's going to be the issue for this, the wings they are going to be building around Paige Becker's correct, but I don't feel like Enrique is the type of woman to take a back seat. Okay.
K.B. 22:35
Well, I got news for you. She better. I got news for you, because Dallas is trying to make some moves that I think she might be out of there she may be, yeah, they're trying to make some moves to a buddy of hers, a person she trains with, some executives in Dallas, may be touching down in Indianapolis,
Graydon Prescott 22:52
yeah, yeah, if you get my meaning and the fever they had the same thing last offseason. And she got extended, yes. And we talked about it extends the next deal, and they need to, they need to repeat this year, because Kelsey Mitchell is a free agent, and she just played the best season.
K.B. 23:07
Chelsea Mitchell is a problem, and there are teams all over the WNBA. Now, here's the backstory, ladies and gentlemen, because of the collective bargaining agreement that's about to pop off, the only talent in the WNBA right now that is secure. That is locked in are the rookies that were just signed. Everybody else will become a free agent. So it is going to be a free for all. Yeah, so talent like a Kelsey Mitchell, who might otherwise not contemplated leaving the Indiana Fever, and she still may not contemplate leaving the Indiana Fever, but believe you me, there are teams that are prepared to throw a boatload of money to Kelsey Mitchell after what she did in these playoffs, what she did all season.
Graydon Prescott 23:49
And I think the same thing can be true for Jackie Young. Sure she could be now. I hope she, of course, as an ACES fan. I hope she doesn't. Yes, I hope she is content with being the Scottie Pippen to Asia Wilson's Michael Jordan, but because that's an
K.B. 24:03
enviable position to be. Yeah, absolutely. But now you got to go to her point of view. Is she being held back a little bit individually? She's got three rings. Now I don't think so. You don't think so. I don't think you name me a point guard or shooting guard that is the focus of a WNBA team page. Records, I was just gonna say, outside of this young lady that just came in, Kelsey Mitchell, Caitlin Clark, Chelsea Mitchell, and Caitlin Clark, I believe, are going to be a great one two punch. And Caitlin is a point guard, but Sabrina
K.B. 24:38
sort of, I don't think so. I mean,
K.B. 24:41
yeah, Sabrina needs the Stewie. It just doesn't happen a lot if that's your top dog, unless you are special. And Kelsey Mitchell is special, unless you are special. I don't see that working. And remember, they had Kelsey Mitchell for years before Caitlin got there. So I think some of the those new bodies that came in there. Kind of opened things up for Kelsey Mitchell, so that made it a little bit easier. But other than page backers, that's going to be hard to build around, unless you got a couple of those people, and they're trying to get one for Paige Becker's down in Dallas, and her name just happens to be Kelsey Mitchell. Hope it doesn't happen. I'm a big fan of Paige. I'm a big fan of Kelsey Mitchell. I want her to stay in Indiana, but I would not be surprised, because they're going to throw a boatload of money at her, and they're not the only team.
Graydon Prescott 25:22
Only team. Yeah, absolutely. And then there's one huge question or one team that has a huge question mark, because nobody knows what's going on, and that's the New York Liberty. This is a team that just Yes, and look the big three now, with Dewey and Jonquil Jones, they all had an injury hit season, so they finished 27 and 17. They lost to Phoenix in the first round. But we know that this is a capable roster. Now, what I don't agree with, and I think this was one of the most egregious firings I've ever seen. I
K.B. 25:52
do not agree at
Graydon Prescott 25:53
all. Sandy brondello, who can coach her? You know what? Not deserve to be absolutely not they. Just won a champion, absolutely not. Stewie missed half the season. This was not her fault.
K.B. 26:05
This. This is why they're getting a lot of heat in the WNBA, because it seems like some people just don't know what they're doing. Yeah, they don't know how to administer teams. The officiating is subpar. The relationships between the players and the executive management in the WNBA has has really cratered. There's a lot that is wrong in this picture, and for someone like Sandy brondello, who just came off of winning a championship last year, right to be fired is unconscionable. I just cannot believe this lady knows
Graydon Prescott 26:35
how to coach in a season where they were clearly the best team, and the year before that, they made the final yes and they lost to the best team in the history of the league. She won't be unemployed long. No, no, absolutely not. And I think Dallas could
K.B. 26:47
go, could go get her. Yes, absolutely, that would be a good move. Yeah, absolutely,

Iowa City might be pushing 130,000 people, if that, with suburbs included, yeah, Coralville and all of that, if that, if that. And yet, they pack the arena, because people are coming all from all over to support. We've got nearly 2 million people in this city in 30 during their 34,000

of name Jack. Try straight in our jack trice stadium and Hilton, Hilton Coliseum, they pack out buildings. So you've never rebels, especially student body. Look, we got to show up for our sports teams. The coaches are doing their thing. Eric Harper has done his thing. He's brought in really talented coaches here to uplift these programs. So we've got to make sure that they're we're there to support because a lot of times we're like that sixth man, especially for a basketball team, or that 12 man on a football field. Yeah. So just heads up, folks, look out for that game on the 28th I believe, yep.
